Dear friends,

I am a newbie here. I am in Hong Kong and I have owned a Yr 2000 Espace 2.0 16V JE0L (RHD) since new. Recently it has  a strange problem on the central lock and tailgate circuit. 9 out of 10 times I am unable to lock/unlock the doors and tailgate using the remote flop. When I press it, sometimes the 4 doors can open/close but usually the tailgate cannot. Or sometimes the tailgate can open/close but only after a 1 second delay. And the signal lights usually do not flash in the normal way (once when unlock and twice when unlock), they flash in any combination they want, sometimes once, sometime twice and sometimes nothing, and the interior lamps do not stay illuminated after the doors are unlocked (probably because the tailgate can't unlock?). Even more strange is that sometimes when I try to lock/unlock by pressing the remote flop repeatedly, the rear wiper moves and the rear fog lamp illuminates! But they will go off after a few seconds. Is there a ghost in my car??!!

However, the button inside the car can lock/unlock without problem. So it seems the cause is unlikely a sticky solenoid.

Any ideas or help please?!

Thanks!

Reason for the "ghost" is you have a tailgate module on this car, a computer inside the back door - handling  wipers, fog lights, numberplate lights and the central lock. Could be a problem with it OR the BII computer delivering signals to it. But why this appends only when using PLIP is strange and probably a coincident (OR a faulty BII). I dont think the tailgate module gets separate signals depending on PLIP or button.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I also suspect that the problem is caused by the module inside the tailgate. In fact I have removed the tailgate panel and checked the connections and solenoid etc but seems everything is fine. By the way, just to make sure, is the module only consists of the circuit board behind the wiper motor? Does it has any other sub-modules hiding somewhere else inside the tailgate? What I checked (visually) was just the Valeo PCB behind the wiper motor. If the problem is really on the tailgate module, is it expensive to replace?

Another thought - would it be the CAN bus causing the problem? e.g. intermittent/poor signalling etc.

Thanks again,
Tony

Yes, the module is the one up behind wiper. It is not communicating with CAN protocol, it is a single communication line on pin 3 on the 4 track connector --> BII pin 4 on the 26 track yellow connector.

Everything else is working controlled by it ? lights, wiper etc ??

I dont know its price.

Yes, everyrhing at the tailgate works fine when operated from inside the car. So would it be the BII which is faulty and transmitting erroneous signal to the tailgate module when the remote plip is pressed?

Thanks,

Could be, but as these black boxes cost money i would get it checked with CLIP or XR25 first to see IF it has any faultcode. Possibly not on this one (unless you get a fauly computer), but still you are dependant of these tools to configure a new box (second hand is not possible).

Thanks for your info.... so, seems there is nothing I can do by DIY.

Scanning fault codes by CLIP or XR25 might help, but that would certainly cost a lot of money since only the Renault dealer has such equipment here in Hong Kong. Why can't we have a simpler car without any computers, which always cause lots of troubles and give good reasons for the dealer to rob money from us?

Anyway, thanks again.

Just checking for faultcodes would hardly be very expencive - you should be able to get a fixed price on that before you decide. I do know a man doing Renaults with CLIP as an independant and my memory said hong kong but when checking he is located in Singapore (me and my geography issues Shocked )

Cars without computers, they dont make them anymore Undecided - i still think of my R30's as the best cars i have ever had exept for "always concerned about corrosion". But the Espace JE is still a very good car - but absolutely not computer free Roll Eyes

Yeah, you're right. All cars nowadays are computer infected, but I still don't understand why we need computer for simple things like locks and wipers?? May be we need a computer to flush our toilet one day?

By the way, I have checked the BII again just an hour ago, it is a CAN bus BII and has the label saying "CAN Control Area Network" on it.

Anyway, depending on how full is my wallet, I may take it to the Renault dealer and let them check and get a quotation later.

Thanks.

All BII's are labeled CAN but that is simply in connection with a warning that mileage is stored in BII and instrument cluster and dialogue inbetween is by CAN protocol. It is simly a warning to read the spesified MR/NT documents before replacing/testing/working on it as some results (like mileage copying) are non-reversable.

Dear renaultbiler,

One more question, is it possible to use some 3rd party scan tools (with CAN capability) to scan the fault codes on the Espace, instead of paying money to the dealer for the CLIP diagnosis? If it can work, then I will try to find a garage that has the "generic" OBD CAN tool.

Thanks again.

To my knowledge - no - exept engine management and some operations like key programming etc that is available on various tools around.

Dear renaultbiler and other friends,

I am thinking seriously about sending the BII to BBA-Reman to repair. But when I tried to remove the BII from the car, I found that it is clamped by a metal bar which seems to be riveted to the outer metal case enclosing the BII and the wires etc. Can someone here please kindly tell me how to remove it properly without damaging anything?

Thanks very much,
Tony

Strange -there is no metal bar securing my BII.  Post a picture -might help.
