Title: EXHAUSTED
Post by: Sparky on July 01, 2007, 01:21:57 pm
MOT time again , the rear discs and pads were changed ( at last).  Quite an easy job once I'd purchased a brake caliper wind back tool ( £10.00), My Citroen's have always had a prominent groove in the piston to engage a bar in , the Espace only has a slight raised bead to pick up on.
The problem this year is the exhaust. a large hole has appeared in the pipe work before the rear silencer. this was not noticed as there was no increased noise from the exhaust it was only noticable when you looked under the car on a hoist. Not a major problem you'd think the local tyre and exhaust factors are only next door. How Wrong because the car is the Grand Espace 2.2DCi it looks like it might be a main dealer part, the factors only list the standard Espace. Surely the only difference is in the  extra length of the straight section of pipe?
My dilemma do I buy a standard rear box and hopefully cut the straight section to suit the new joint. or is it feasible to have the hole welded op as the rear silencer is solid  only where the pipe drops is it rotten, a very small section. probably where the water sits when the car is not being used.
Any thoughts on this will be gratefully received I will try a couple of more Exhaust factors on Monday.  Has anyone tried the stainless route?
NB. the original exhaust is all in one at present and at 32,000 miles has not lasted very well.

Regards Bob

Hi Sparky

I once tried replacing the rear discs and pads on my Grand Espace, but gave up. I didn't have the wind back tool! :)

About the exhaust... of course you can get a replacement for the Grand. Arvin Meritor has it on their list. As a matter of fact, I have one on ours - and being a V6 our car is even made in less numbers than the DCI. It may be that the exhaust is the same though, but I don't know. The Arvin Meritor exhaust is not quite the quality of the original piece, but okay and far cheaper than the original one. Here it is while it was still on my workshop table (sorry for the mess!):

Bob
Euro Car Parts (www.eurocarparts.co.uk) can supply centre sections with centre box for £43 and a rear silencer box section for £56.60.
Both made by Bosal... which is a good quality manufacturer from first hand experience on my old 5 Series.

Original equipment exhausts on the 2.2dCi Grand are made by Eberspächer... or at least they are on mine!!... but you don't seem to see them in the aftermarket for some reason.
Strange how your original exhaust has only lasted 32,000 miles. Mine is 5 years old and done 78,000 and looks like lasting another year or two yet.

Thanks Anders, Martin, 3 more motor factors today  2 saying that it is a main dealer part only and one giving me a price of £77.00 +VAT for a next day delivery.

Martin, I spoke to Euro parts and correct in what you were saying about the prices but alas this is for the standard Espace not the Grand which again they're looking into. so the case continues.
I have located a possible source of a spare unit  but that is located in the Scottish Borders and maybe cost prohibitive. Also a friend is looking to have it welded up as a short term solution and possibly return a favour.

I couldn't get an exhaust in time, so I had the original plated and welded. There was plenty of good metal there to attach to. The car has now obtained its MOT for another year, so I have more time to look for a suitable replacement.  It seems that the Grand Espace  Series III made from 2000-2002 the final ones, don't seem to appear in the Exhaust catalogue's.  Timax (Alvin) cover the petrol engines (1999-2002) and the diesel engine G8T only to 2000.  The exhausts look the same in the catalogue but do have different part numbers.  The standard Espace 2.0L petrol engine has a 50.5mm diameter bore as opposed to the others which have a 55.5mm diameter bore.

Glad you got it sorted to get through the MOT Bob.
I would be interested, as I am sure would other 2.2dCi Grand owners on the forum, if you eventually manage to find a source for replacement exhaust system components.

Oh yes, I'd be interested too - It's only a matter of time before I need to replace the exahust (nature of things). Thanks!
