Or was there special made just for the prototype?
Image on which i mean:

Interestin question, the rear ligths look very standart, but from which car? it seams that nobody on this forum knows the answer!
Hans

That is sad. Have been looking for them a long while now, i'm trying to build a u8 look-a-like.
Do you have any suggestions on wich rearlights that would fit moderately?

heh - my immediate thought when I looked at the U8 rear was: Urraco! - but it would be taking it a bit far to scrap an Urraco to restore a Baghera ? :-)
How about some of the old Fiat models ?

... they don't look similar to me ;)

haha! no i won't lay my hands on a uracco (;
I have searched a bit on google and i like the alfa romeo gtv from the 80's but they seems a bit big for the bagheera. I think it would be a bit odd if you reflect it.

I have also found another that old skódas have, the car do look like a lada but the rear lights is kinda nice, but too big. skoda 130l i think.

Have a look at the rear lights of a Ford Capri Mk1. Upside down they might look like the U8 rear lights.
-

well, I didn't say they were identical, but IMO the U8 resembles the Urraco even more than the standard Baggy. (which got the nickname mini-Urraco when it was introduced)
How about these (upside down) :
although a Renault 30 is probably not easy to find though ?
/Lennart
-
;D i have located them! But i don't think it will be a easy to find them :(
It is worth a try, the model of rearlights seems to be well-used on the maserati's and lamborghini's under that era. 8), found the lights on:
Maserati Merak:

Maserati Bora:

And one i first thougt was a Maserati but IS an Lamborgini (espada):

You are right, Jacob. But HOW on earth did Matra come about to use Maserati parts?

I got so interested in just why... so i looked it up, maybe the designer of the Maserati Khamsin, the well known Bertone, had a finger in the game?
The years fit: produced within 1974 och 1983. in 421 cars.
And he have done the design on: simca 1000 and 1200 cupé.
But it is just a guess. Maybe Matra just wanted some prestige by using Maserati parts 8)
Aand a picture on the Khamsin is here (it's much more fun to read a thread with pics (; ):

Citroen had close cooperation with Maserati at that time. Not the same company as Matra but closer to home. I have not checked the Citroen SM rear lights.

I was also thinking Citröen, but it isn't SM:

Citroën owned Maserati from 1970 til 1975 when Maserati was sold to de Tomaso. During the Citroën years there was four Maseratis with the Citroën hydraulic system for suspension, brakes and steering - Bora, Merak, Khamsin and Quattoporte II. Merak has the same engine as the Citroën SM, a six cylinder version of the Maserati V8 found in the Bora and the Khamsin.
Five years later Peugeot-Citroën took over Talbot Matra. But surely the companies must have had contacts during the years when the U8 was developed.
-
valross, intresting! A friend of mine have a mint Citroën SM and the sound of the engine in that car is wonderful!
Anyhow, i have got contact with a retailsalesman (in italy) for the rear linses, he did'nt have the the hole lamps... and the price for 2 linses is, take a grab to your chair now; 146 EUR. And this i secondhand...!
Is it worth it? ;)
Well, i will keep on looking for some cheeper place...
-
A friend of mine is chairman of the SM section of the Club Citroën Suedois, and he also has a couple of Meraks.
According to him, the backlights were made by a company called Carello who produced lighting equipment to many different car makers, including Maserati, de Tomaso, Lamborghini, an obviously Simca Matra.
This is two places where you can buy new rear lights for your U8-project:

-
Also DeTomaso Pantera has them, but turned upside-down:
My next idea was Fiat 124 Spider, but they are different a little:

-
Eh, I haven't noticed the second list of this topic, where valross allready helped to You...
-
Thanks to everybody! i think i will bid on those ebay parts... its like 60€ cheeper !
-
It's like the rear brakes...
If you go to a Renault Alpine and ask for the "Big Brakes" they will be 5 to 10 times more expensives than the same brakes from a Bagheera.
So ::)
Why do you look for these rear lamps from an exotic Italian when they where simply coming from an easier to find Alfa ???
Anyway, even from them, they will be expensive, so better to stick to the originals
-
Ofcourse! But wich alfa does have the rearlights then?
-
I also was thinking about Alfa or Fiat (cos they are cheaper) but I went through model rows and didn't found them on any car of these producers. The most simillar are those on Fiat 124 Spider, but any on Alfa.
-
;D I suggest you to have another look at some alfa's ;)
After the week-end, if you didn't find it yet, I will add a clue
-
Not even a little answer ::)
Well, at least I hope you've use the weekend to work like me on your cars.
And ? Never heard about some Alfa Romeo Junior ?

The Alfa Junior 1600Z has the same rear lights as the U8.
But only a total of 402 cars were made, so Alfa Junior 1600Z lights must be really hard to find.
-

I often work 6 days a week but with some weekends off. Ok, the alfas is rear. So i will keep on looking, i have a bit time of on my self to search, now that i know what model i want.
Thank you for all answers. I have learn't me a lot!

I'm gona have a search on my hands for some back lights when I get my Bagheera home. At the moment it has round Opel Manta A back lights :-[ I hate when people do that. I always thought the U8 had nice lights. I know I won't find original Bagheera Series 1 back lights for a while but I have to change those Manta ones straight away for anything that even resembles Bagheera lights.
Has anyone any suggestions of what kind of lights would do the job for a while? I also have an Opel Kadett C Coupe and I have a few spare back lights but I'm not sure about them. A bit small. Opel Ascona B maybe???
-
Hi Bob,
I have been looking at some truck lights that look a bit similar.
Regards,
Stig
-
Bob, U8 had very nice rear lights, but unfortunally it's hard to find for right money. I don't know but opel seems ok. But not the best.
Stig, Do you have any example on wich you have found yet?
-
Hej Jacob,
Jag har sett några i Swedols katalog. Har inte kollat måtten exakt men det ser ganska nära ut jämfört med original serie 1 Bagh.
Hälsningar,
Stig
Sorry for Swedish only but the company i refer to exists in Sweden only and the website is probably impossible to navigate for non swedes.
Stig
-
Ska genast kolla detta, intressant!
Tack!
...
Will check this out!

But i think they are too basic. If i only could find those maserati covers.

Jacobosterlindh: but another "unimportant" question ;D - why You are searching rearlights for Bagheera U8, You are making a replica ???
-

Yes i'm trying to do an "U8-replica" but with an PSA- T16 engine. And this with red-paint.
But i haven't come so far in the restuaration of the chassis:
I'm trying to complete the car to the summer but we will see... :)
-
But, hasn't U8 longer wheelbase? I mean that it was 20cm?
-
Yes, around 15cm longer and around 19cm longer wheelbase.
But in all meanings, it's a replica and not exactly the same. I will only do coilovers and new engine and lenghten up the car with 8 cm.
My other bagh that will be an pure race-car. And is finnished around 1-2 year from now is my V12 project.
That project will take form as soon as my bagh u8-replica is finnished.
/Jacob
-
V12 WOW! Which engine You are going to use? Cos only one and only V12 which I know as available one is 6,0 V12 Mercedes-Benz :o
-
Hehe, i wonder why not any more people have builded any fun things of these cars, there so simple.
The v12 im going to use is from the bmw.
-
Hi Jacob,
I guess you have the BMW V12 lying around otherwise I would definately recommend the Jaguar V12 for such a project.
Stig
-
Yes, i have a donator car. But nothing is imposseble...
At first i have to complete my U8 replica project. Until summer. And under next winter this V12 project will take form. :)
We will see!
-
Hej Jacob,
-
Hi Jacob,
The one you are working on is DTH531 then.
I thought it was the -75 because it had the steel side panels in the luggage compartment.
My -74 is open all the way out to the fibreglass.
My -74 passed its test in august and I got a few hundred km. in it before the winter (or rain period) started.
Here are some pics from an event I attended: http://www.jec-sweden.se/images/Sportvagnstraffen/album/index.html

Nice pictures, but pictures and meetings like these makes me loving Matra more and more, because everywhere (on every meeting) you can see bags of MG B, MG A, Triumph TR4, Spitfire, Mercedes SL (W107), Corvette, VW Beetle, etc. - you know. Every a..hole who wants to be interesting is simply buying one of these cars and have no knowledge about it in fact.
-
Thanks,
And yes I do also love the Bagheera shape. Even though it is mine on the pics I think that it holds up well against the others. Maybe it will be more apreciated in the future. It is already very rare.

DTH531 MATRA BAGHEERA PB 1974 SVART
PAB158 SIMCA MATRA PB 1974 RÖD
I only have the orignalpapers and manuals for the PAB158 - the one on the pictures.
The DTH531 is my upcomming V12 project.
Concerning the steelpanels in the trunk. it's car to car, how rusty they have been thru the years maybe? Because my DTH531 (Black) hasn't the steel side planels. And this Red PAB158 has.
The bagh is an shape of it's own. So beautiful :)
-
Hi Jacob,
According to the registry:
DTH531 chassies number: X35504X110886 which is a 1974 X335504nnnnn
PAB158 chassies number: X35505X113245 which is a 1975 X335505nnnnn
I think the side plates came on the 75.
Regards,
Stig

Jacob,
If the engine will be a peugeot one and if the shape will only be approximative, not the same lenght, why do you speak of U8 replica ?
Only for the rear lights ?
Won't you prefer to do a real replica then ?
If yes, I can provide the details. Pictures or the rear tubular frame, details on the engines to match, front axes, brakes , the gearbox ...
-
Hi Spyros,
I at least would be very interested in seeing the U8 documentation you have.
The engine is I guess the most difficult part of the project.
Stig
-
I would have been thinking this being impossible and very difficult until being so deep into my current engine project. But I might have found some of my missing parts, I'll know tomorrow. My doc is hidden somewhere in my attic so I will need some time to get to it
-

Ok ! My "u8-replica" is only a body-replica. I will not have an v8 legally installed and approved by the SBP ("swedish survey highway authority") There for i will go on a xu10 converted to turbo. And thats possible to get approved by SBP in sweden.
What is the project "andy" have?
-
I must check my old e-mails. It seems that Spyros and I remember it differently.
My recollection is that Andy is planning a turbo charged version of the standard engine.
Spyros thinks that it was a compressor he planned to use.
Stig
-
Checked my mail and Spyros is correct.
Andy is planning to use a Shorrock supercharger on a 1.6 emgine in his blower bag project.
Andy is on the Matra Enthusiast Club UK mailinglist.
You can sign up at the bottom of this page http://www.matraclub.org.uk/links.html
Very infrequent used mailing list and mostly Murena related.

Stig

I would also like a translation
im using babelfish for now :)
btw, do you have the same enginemounts in your bageera as murena 1.6?

You mean the ones larger than the last ones of the Bagheera ? Yes

Oh perfect! just what i wanted. Do you have more pictures to share around your project? Is it the same that is on the video on video.google.com?
-
No , the engine on my black X is a tuned 1.6 (m :-X na ) engine.
Outside exactly as the original but 1590, MaxiRoute Camshaft, flowed head, DCNF40 carbs ... and mated to the AT gearbox. Usual development road.
That one will find his way on another chassis I have. If and when I finished it... Plenty of details to solve still ::)
I'm today very happy because I might have found the ideal cam belt.
Did you realize that there are something like 10 different teeth profiles for cam belts ? + multiple width (need at least something similar as the pulley) + the length + the pitch ...
It's going to be exotic.
