Hi all
does anyone know how to get access to the top of the front suspension strut /spring, as I cant see a way through the engine compartment ????
I think the top bearing is worn or seized but can see how to remove the strut to examine it? :-\

Hi Brian
The strut mountings are hidden in the cabin air filter housings, which are accessible behind the lids in either side of the engine room. Here's an instruction included with the air filters - that should help you.

Your'e welcome. Let us know what you find. I beleive I need to have them replaced on my Grand too as they are knocking from time to time. It's a common problem AFAIK

...the "problem" is that the bearing is located below the spring and not on top - making it very wonerable to moisture and dirt. There is 2 drain holes under the spring cup - i think that keeping them open will be better for the bearing over time.
When that is said it is an easy job replacing them if you have a spring compresser available as you need to separate the spring from the damper to change them. Bearings are also cheap (!) and is to be found in many parts warehouses as "non original" part.

Hmm, I don't get that. How can the spring be over the bearing?

See photo... bearing being item No 1
I changed these on my JE0G recently and it was no problem - but spring compress tool is required.

Excellent, Tom :D

Yes, a knocking can be quite common, but all you need to do is tighten the large nut at the top. I've done quite a few and they are usually fine afterwards.

That is certainly worth a try! Thanks a lot, Roy :) I'll post my experiences when I have done the job.

thanks for the pics and advice , can anyone give me a few tips on doing the job ? I have taken struts of other cars and in some cases you dont have to remove it completely to get access to the top!! I have spring clamps but does the strut have to come off or can it be lowered enough to replace the bearing without tacking the strut off the car? thanks for any pointers you can give me. ???
-
Just remove them completely - it is much better and much faster in total time spent than working with spring removal on site (if it is possible at all.. doubt it), removing and replacing complete unit is done in minutes once the car is off ground and top nuts removed.

thanks mate will take it out then ,
cheers
