Title: Espace Power problems - Alternator?
Post by: richardt on July 13, 2008, 10:09:52 pm
Currently driving 2001 Grand Espace 2.2DCi - having problems with power loss and it went into 'limp mode' so replaced camshaft & crankshaft sensors after ECU advice but no joy - so cleaned EGR, replaced fuel filter now no code errors being shown by ECU - yeah or so i thought! The car will now only start and idle and if I accelerate or put clutch in it dies.

Was wondering if it could be alternator and/or weak battery (lower voltage than normal)? Would these affect acceleration/idling?

Please help!!!! :'(

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The alternator and battery are easy to check: 1: Measure the voltage over the battery with ignition off. 2: Measure it with the engine running (idling should be enough).

First should be at least 11.5V, preferably closer to 12V.
Second should be 14V - stable.

Many thanks Anders for replying alternator & battery ok.
Espace will idle but will not rev at all - any ideas. No fault codes showing so I'm confused - could it be an accelerator pedal issue?

More likely something to do with engine management and/or fuel supply, but I'm only guessing!

Cheers Anders will keep you posted IF I get this fixed - thanks again.

I would check the flow meter, if this is broke the engine dies on throttle. They CAN be faulty without giving a fault code.
Flow meter is almost a service exchange part as they get worn after 100k km +++

Thanks for the advice renaultbiler - will check and update. Two things before I begin:
1. Will a laguna II flow meter fit & work in an espace for the purposes of checking?
2. Do you think I can bypass the flow meter l(ike some were suggesting you can do withn the EGR) again so that I can eliminate it as a fault?

Thanks again

Dont know if a lag II flow meter will work - if it is identical, yes ofcourse - but i doubt it

Neither is it possible to bypass as it gives continous readings to the ecu on how much air that passes, so it will be very hard to simulate with a potmeter imo

Thanks for the reply - only asked about Laguna II because didn't want to buy a new one to be told that that wasn't the problem. Can't think of anything else that would stop it accelerating. Will keep you informed IF there is progress.
Cheers again

sorry for delay in updating my truama as have been on holiday. Renault 'experts' said it could be airflow but I told them we had tried another one and it still didn't help. Told me they had to eliminate faults so they replaced it anyway and of course that wasn't it - so new airflow for no reason. Finally tracked fault down to Catalytic converter problem - replaced it with straight pipe as temporary measure going great but need to replace it - is it an easy job or 'expert' help needed?
