Title: clicking noise
Post by: rickuk72 on September 02, 2008, 06:32:26 pm
have a clicking noise coming from a component inside the engine bay of my 1999 3.0l v6 grand espace.
the clicking noise is coming from a black box on the left handside as you look in the bay. there are 2 small hoses and an electrical plug connected to it. i pulled the top hose off and it's sucking air. the numbers on the box are.......6025315870......and......H 6025316596. One i have found out is a charcoal filter but for what I don't know......any ideas guys ?????

That's the canister being emptied by a small membrane pump. It collects remains of petrol and oil from the engine, and at regular intervals, the box is emptied into the inlet manifold by the pump. The clicking you are hearing is the pump membrane operating. The box collects toxic gasses and other stuff from getting into the atmosphere. Instead it is burnt in the engine, where the combustion and the catalytic converter ensures that any remains of it is broken into non-toxic molecules.

thanks for the reply.

how come when i take the top hose off the revs on the engine go up slightly then ?

i'm also after pictures of where all my engine sensors are......clip test came up with o2 sensor but turns out it's not that. so need to work my way round the car.

Because you open up an extra air inlet to the inlet manifold past the throttle body. More air -> higher revs (the computer makes sure the fuel amount is raised accordingly too).

Hi, the oxygen sensor fault "always" shows on these according to a skilled Renault mechanic. It also does on mine all the time.

What is the problem with it ?

the problem I have is that the car stalls. some days are fine while others it stalls while driving and bump starts itself or stalls while idleing. after having the cambelt replaced along with tensioners etc, water pump and spark plugs (yes nice big bill !) i noticed this problem....renault had it back and told me it was coming up with the O2 sensor fault. after being quoted £300 i decided to replace it myself for not even a 10th of that ! but still having the same problem.
i have seen this kind of thing posted on this site and know i'm chasing a ghost....so think i'll just work my way around all the sensors. unless anyone has any good gen ????

try coolant temp sensor, should be a thread about a 3.0 stalling in here - i think there is a parts picture of its location in one of those threads (its located between engine head(s) and air filter box)
