Title: Replacement side mirrors
Post by: Anders Dinsen on September 15, 2008, 09:43:38 am
Scared of ruining my Murena's original side mirrors during daily use, I'm going to fit a pair of replacement side mirrors. The originals will then go on storage until I need them or for "special use". I think the best match is the Peugeot 309 side mirros for the early model years (they have a metal bar for adjustment, where the later model years have cable adjustment):

They are cheap (60€ for a pair) and it looks like Politecnic recommends them. Look here (scroll down): http://www.politecnic.com/vitrage.htm (http://www.politecnic.com/vitrage.htm)

Are there anyone here who has experience with this conversion?

Cheers,
Anders

Hello Anders,

60,-Eur for pair is cheap? Check this ;) todays rate is cca 1 EUR to 26 CZK.
On this site: http://www.aci.cz/default.asp?cls=spresenttrees&strid=3621 (http://www.aci.cz/default.asp?cls=spresenttrees&strid=3621) You can find them for cca 36,-Eur/pair.

Hmm...
At least it's cheaper than Politecnic, who want's about 60€ for ONE plus VAT... And I can get this in a local shop ;)

Do you know anything, Michal? ;)

I don't fully understand to Your question. This shop is nearby my homeplace and the price I wrote is included the DPH (= VAT). Don't know the post costs but think that it won't be too much. If You are interested in it, I can arrange it for You Anders.

I didn't doubt the value of your local shop's offer, I was just complaining about Politecnic's rip-off.

Being old and grumpy (well not really, but I like to perceive myself that way), I love saving a few cents... thanks for your kind offer! Could you check postage costs, please?

And I'm still interested in practical experience from someone who has done the conversion.

Very interesting indeed Anders...

I have thought about the exact same thing, but have been looking at the Fiat Uno mirrors instead.
I know they are not french, but I think they look better than the Peugeot 309, also more like the orig. mirrors.

Can be found on Ebay at the same price as 309's, and they will also be availible "forever"  :D

Have you seen the front of the peugeot 309 mirrors?

Compared to the uno:

I'll let you know when I get on with my project, though it might be a while  ;)

Yes I have, and I tend to agree - they don't have that sporty look that the original mirrors have. Or maybe I'm just relating it to the 309, which I have always found too much of an "old man's car" ;) The Fiat Uno mirror could be a better match... The original mirrors are actually also Italian design, shared with a Lancia AFAIR. The Uno mirros are also slightly cheaper, at only 28€ for a pair in Michal's local shop:

I am currently working on modifications to Alfa 156 electric mirrors which I hope to fit to my murena - electric mirrors would be a big help when driving a left hand drive car on UK roads.

They will be operated using Peugeot 406 coupe door switches which I will be using to replace the electric mirror switches at the same time.  The advantage of the Alfa mirrors - apart from being a nice shape - are the easily detachable alloy base plates which (hopefully) I will be able to grind down and make fit.  So far I have made one base plate the correct shape (they are too big so that makes life easier) but I have still work to do on the fixings as I do not want to alter the doors in any way.

I will take some photos when I make a bit more progress.

Good point, but not really valid for me. The Alfa mirrors look good, but I'd personally feel that they were a bit too different from the original ones...

Your point about base plates is very valid, though. I can't work out how the Uno mirrors are fitted to the door, and I'm afraid that a good deal of work will have to go into making a suitable mount for the Murena door.

Out shopping Saturday, I passed a 309 and took an extra careful look at the mirrors. They are not bad at all! The shape and size of the rubber matches closely, and the shape of the mirror housing is not that bad at all. The Uno mirror has a much lighter construction which will look too different from the original, so it's not an option I'm going for.

Is that the same as the 205 mirror?  It looks similar and Eurocarparts list them at £13.25 each.

the 205mirrors are much smaller and round in shape

I am using the immitation Uno mirrors at the moment, wich ar very cheap.
The quality of the rubber is not so good as from the originals.
I found original old Uno mirrors, wich I am respaying black at the moment.
Quality is a lot better.

And yes, they are the same brand as the Murena originals.(Vitaloni)

I don't know about the Peugeot immitations.

Yes it does look good, so what is it and where do you get them from?
