Title: 3x Fault codes + symptoms. Any clue anyone?
Post by: TheJoker on November 14, 2008, 12:48:00 pm
Hi again guys,

The car has started to bother me again. Sadly. This time the symptoms are as follows:

When turning the ignition I get the EKG heart rate icon and the "welcoming"  ::) beep. I can keep doing this for many many times. "Ignition" on and of, on and off... always the EKG icon. I can then crank the engine over, and it obviously won't start. Sometimes when I turn the key back on, I get the OK signal and the car starts just fine.

It runs steady as a rock, but then it can suddenly cough really badly and ignite the red engine icon with "stop" written on it on the dash. I refuse to obey this and floor the throttle and it soon returns to normal.  :o
This only happens "once in a while". Yesterday I drove it for 40 miles in one go and it didn't miss a single beat. But during the "out" journey it hiccupped in town. I'm afraid it'll do it in some dangerous place and I'll get stuck on the road. It's already almost died in the same way in a huge queue of traffic.  >:(

Needless to say my blood pressure is not at a healthy level when I'm driving the car.

I took it to the garage yesterday and they connected it to the system to read the codes, but as you guys here know, that's virtually pointless as they can't make anything out of the codes.

These are the codes from the Bosch reader:
- 06150
- 06164
- 06182
He also mentioned something about the glow plugs having too high voltage or something. I didn't really catch that.

Does anyone have any clues before I go to the nearest Renault garage and spend more time/money..?!

Thanks!!

If the scanner was Bosch im sure Bosch technical support will help the technitian further to clearify these codes

That's not the impression I got... Was sent away with an apology, the codes, and a bill...  :-\

From what i know the technitian are able to contact the Bosch support service for these kind of things - i bet they didn't try that ey ? (assuming they have a registered and licenced scanner)
This car has in addition a Bosch ecu so they should be able to understand it on most issues - but not nessesarily.

That goes against anything I've read on this forum before.
Including this one: http://www.matrasport.dk/forum/index.php/topic,1073.0.html
The concensus seem to be that the ECU (made by Bosch) in the Espace is riddled with bugs that only the Renault equipment can decipher.

Do educate me if I've got this wrong?!

I said "not nessesarily" - i have a close friend that runs a Bosch Diesel center and i know for a fact that they (Bosch) assist very good when they are requested.

The fact is that the Bosch scanner connects ok and presents some codes, i assume this is professional Bosch equippment and cannot in any way be mixed with a generic cheap and OBD scanner that seem to read and present OBD codes in many ways.

In my oppinnion these codes should be confronted the Bosch technical support rather than just presenting you a bill and "sorry"....

But if you have a general attitude that these cars produces nothing but mumbo jumbo due to bugs that only Renault equippment can read, i suggest starting at a Renault technician first instead of wasting money elsewhere. I would however ask the Bosch technician to consult Bosch to try and clearify the codes.

My "general attitude" is that I've never heard of anyone being told to go back to the garage to question the work of a professional. From my experience, the same garage has also managed to find meaningful fault codes in the system (and subsequently fixed the problem). Nearest Renault garage is 15 miles away, then one I've used it less than 5 minutes walk away. I also don't carry a very high opinion about the Renault garage(s).

So, I'm sure that you can understand that I question your statement when you're the first one that tells me that the Bosch equipment is actually capable of possibly producing meaningful diagnostics. Especially as I would now have to go back to the garage, confront the people, that probably have been trained in using the equipment, to tell them to dial home to the mothership and ask for an explanation. IMO that should have been done by default and thus I would assume that they'd exhausted that option, if it existed.

Thusfar the concensus has been that the generic Bosch equipment will diagnose a large amount of the fault codes, but some of them it just is unable to deal with and/or explain. I was hoping that maybe someone had heard of the same codes it found.

Now I might have go back to the garage and and yank their chain even more.  :P

And that is the big question, is it professional enough or isn't it - impossible to tell for me, but there is loads of garages out there that isn't - even if they are connected to Bosch etc. Have a few of them around here too, poor service and most problemcars is just sent off again with a bill of various sizes.

So, I'm sure that you can understand that I question your statement when you're the first one that tells me that the Bosch equipment is actually capable of possibly producing meaningful diagnostics.

From what i've seen a professional Bosch garage have very good equippment and access to highly skilled technitians backhand. They also have a big central database where they log problems and known issues. This is where such faultcodes sometimes may be found along with problem and solutions.

Especially as I would now have to go back to the garage, confront the people, that probably have been trained in using the equipment, to tell them to dial home to the mothership and ask for an explanation. IMO that should have been done by default and thus I would assume that they'd exhausted that option, if it existed.

Agree - but still they might lack the habit of using the available recourses, depends on their true eager to serve and fix...

Now I might have go back to the garage and and yank their chain even more.  :P

I would not hesitate to ask further - but by all means, it may not give any more answers and then Renault diagnostics comes next. I assume (hope) they didn't delete the faultcodes for you this time ;)

Thanks Tom. I'll see what I'll do - I'm a bit sick n' tired of the car at the moment.

You could try the www.ilexa.co.uk/forum under the Renault section and present the codes just to see if anyone there recognize them. But be acurate with the subject when posting or they will close the thread... (follow guidelines)

Cool, thanks! Not even thought of that there would be such a forum around. I'll read up and have a closer look. Right now it's about beer o'clock...  8)
