Title: Indicators stopped working
Post by: choowonit on May 12, 2009, 06:59:05 pm
Well as usual another strange electrical problem on my 1996 2.2 dci

for some reason the indicators have just stopped working (left and right)

Checked fuse all seem fine

hazards work fine (is this the same relay ?)

Had the stering column plastics off to check for loose connections seem fine, ( but when there managed to fix my clutch which i thought was the old dodgy master cylinder issue, turnedd out the plastic eye on the end of mater cylinder push rod had slid partially off the clutch pedal spigot, due to the plastic retaining clip being broken but i digress)

any clues where to look nxt ?

That doesn't quite make sense... dci started in 2000 or so and 2.2 dti JE in 1997... It makes quite a difference as late model JE's have CAN bus electronics and the earlier are simpler.

So please clarify your model year! :)

Interesting, I have heard about JE's being sold in 1996, but this is the first time I come across one.

I'll have a look in my diagram book and see what I can come up with. Since the hazards light work, chances are that the relay is okay and that it's a wiring/fuse/connector problem. Can you check the fuse once more? Sometimes fuses look okay, but are in fact blown anyway.

Changed both fuses to be absolutely sure, still same problem left and right turn  signal not working.

but still everything illuminating on hazard switch

It's a strange case you have here... The most obvious reason would the switch itself, but you said you checked it. Besides, if it had failed, chances are that it would only have failed on one side, not both.

Still, I can't find anything that could lead to a problem like yours by looking at the wiring diagram. The wiring to the indicator stalk switch actually passes through the hazards switch, so it could actually be that one (or the connector).

How well are you with electrics? I can make a scan of the diagram page for you, but it's not easy to follow, I'm afraid.

Thanks anders, a scan of the diagram could be useful,

i will have the switch out again and have another look in that area

cheers for your help

Well thanks to your steer "stalk switch actually passes through the hazards switch" Anders it has led me to the problem.

At some point in time a previous owner had fitted an after market central locking control (obviously cheaper than buying a renault key fob lol)

the control unit was squezzed into the roof hazard switch/button box, in time this had worn through one of the wires to the hazard switch, yes you got it, the one for the indicators

many thanks again for sharing your knowledge  ;D

Woohoo, the mystery has been solved! :D Great. You are very welcome.

I remember my wife was a bit annoyed about her old 1997 Espace having only an infra red remote central locking, and if we had not sold it in exchange for a later model with an RF key, I think I would eventually have had to make a similar modification to ours...

I wish you many joyful miles with your Espace!
