Title: 3.0 v6-24 – Engine stalls when cold.
Post by: Trolkar on October 04, 2009, 11:38:46 am
Hi there!
Over the past few days, where the temperature is around 4-8 Celsius, I have some problems with my engine.
It runs fine, and the rev is a bit higher than normal. But it suddenly just stalls. – Mainly after a short stop in the traffic (red light e.g.)  and when the accelerator is pressed, the engine just stalls.

If running in “n” the engine starts up with a high rev, and slowly drops into normal rev. – And then after 1 or 2 min. it just stalls…

After the engine has stalled, it is very heard to start again.
The starter has to run for about 5--20 sec. and the accelerator has to be pressed down slowly. – After it starts, it reacts like an old engine which chokes in petrol.

This way of starting the engine also happens when I have to start then engine and it is warm.

What is wrong, and are there a link between the errors?

Water temperature sensor is defective!

This is a well known problem on this engine. Just replace it and the trouble will be cured! A diagnosis will tell you the lambda sensor is defective, but it's not. I have no idea why these sensors have a tendency to fail, but they just do....!

Sensors tend to be expensive, and I would personally only trust a genuine Renault part.

It's easy to replace, though. It's the one with the green connector on the photo below. You will need to remove the air filter housing to get proper access.

One genuine sensor is on the way!...

The error was as you wrote,  lambda but also the water temp. sensor.

Is it possibly to change without draining the coolingsystem?

The lambda fault is always present on this car - i think its more like a software design problem.

You can change sensor without draining the cooling system.

I agree. Some water will flow out of the hole, but not a lot, so it shouldn't cause any problems.

Hi there!
Sorry for the late reply! – Work is "almost" killing me  :-\
I managed to change the sensor. My biggest problem was to get the tiny metal clips off.
After replacing, the engine runs just fine! – It haven’t  stalled since!
15 min. of work, and a sensor a 435 Dkr. Around 58 Eur.

Thank you SO much for your help!
