Title: New Wing Mirror Parts.
Post by: Titus on December 10, 2009, 12:01:54 am
I've had the time old served problem of a broken wing mirror. This time it was my fault by carelessly reversing into the garage and catching the casing, thus breaking the alloy mount and brass centre pin. As we know, the alloy is impossible to repair.

There is a South African company which can supply this part for £106.00 But it is not currently available and this is also very costly.

At the NEC Classic Car Show this year I enquired with a foundry company how much the part would cost to remanufacture. They estimated £300 for the pattern plus £35 per item, tax included. This didn't include the drilling of the holes and also not to include the brass centre pin. Makes SA look OK if you can get them.

To the point. Our fellow MEC UK member Greig has asked me to post this. He is in the process of milling the part out of alluminium. So far he has successfully machined the barrel part and he has shown me the rest is possible. How he can do this is beyond me but if he can do it we need preorders of 30 items to bring the price down to about half the South African price. That would include the brass pin.

Please let MEC UK know (here) if there is any interest. It would also apply to our Lancia friends if anyone is part of that rust fraternity :)

Oetker? Any hated Vitaloni mirrors would be welcome before ebaying ;)

As far as I know, everything has been tried with no success. It has been possible to get a fix but at 80kph watch the mirror break again :'(

I'm interested (as a spare to keep), and think there will be at least a few others here i Denmark who are.

Have you checked with the French, Belgian, Dutch and German clubs for similar ideas?

/Anders

Sorry can't help out here.
I traded my 2 mirrors to a fellow club member.
I like to spend my time and money on the other nags of the car.
The glass was bad and mechanic also not in the best shape.
Driving a right corner was by hearing.
If you hear nothing, things went well ::)
I  replaced them by Fiat Uno mirrors for the time being.
Safety before originality.

I think te Vitaloni's can be reproduced in China for around $15.- or less if you can find the right people and place a order for 10.000 pieces :(

I seem to recall that someone else has re-manufactured the plastic gears.  With the new arm, that would cover most of the commonly broken parts.  Put me down for one please Titus.  Oetker may not like them but they are far superior to the aftermarket ones that my car came with, as shown in my avatar.

I seem to recall that someone else has re-manufactured the plastic gears.

I have ordered some plastic parts in South Africa, recieved them without problems, and repaired one of my mirrors almost two year ago. Below an old and a new part.  Some other parts were also renewed.

Recently, someone of the French club has re-manufactured the plastic gears: http://www.matra-passion.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4803 but I am afraid those sets of gears had to be pre-ordered. Price € 50 a complete set and some money for the transport.

As far as I understand there is a discussion now about the re-manufacturing of the metal parts of the mirrors.

I would seriously consider "scavenging" before having any parts re manufactured... there must be some used ones around...

I am working on replacing my mirrors with Alfa 156 electric ones.  I have never liked the mirrors Matra picked for the murena as I think they droop and subsequently look like something off a kit car.  My opinion only!

Being in a part of the UK with no dual carriageways having good mirrors when driving a left hand drive car is essential and having electric mirrors would be a real bonus.

I have a good pair of mirrors which work as they should and intended to keep them should I ever sell the murena in the future.  As that is not really all that likely I may consider selling them - after I an happy with the Alfa ones of course!

If anyone is really desperately in need of a pair of mirrors let me know.

David

Like to see the result with the new mirrors. I agree that electric ones would be nice.

My murena re-build is currently on hold due to a daliance with an Alfa Spider S4 re-build.

(murena is safely tucked away in the garage for now!)

Apart from the shape and size, the Alfa mirors have a metal base which unbolt and the base is bigger than the murena one - obvious scope for grinding is an advantage.  As soon as I get one of the mirrors fitted I will post some pictures.

The Alfa mirrors are a bit round shape.
It doesn't match with the shape of the car in my opinion, (wedge).
However, I am interested how it looks on the car.
It took me some time to go for the Uno mirrors, but still looking around for better solutions.

Hi Titus,

I will take 2 x Brackets. One Port and one Starboard, assuming they are handed?

Cheers,

G.P.

I don't think they are handed.  The metal parts on these mirrors are stamped 'S' (sinistro) for the left and 'D' (destro) for the right if they are handed.

The part we refer to in my original picture is not handed. It maybe that other parts it is attached to are, but as they are not the parts that break we should be ok.

It is Greig who is attempting to make the part, not me, so I will pass all interest on to him.

If anyone is in contact with the other Matra clubs, could they please enquire if there is any interest. Thanks.

Correction.  It is not that one part that is £106 but the whole mechanism assembly (the same as I sold you Titus).  Check out their website.

For general information the only parts of the door mirrors that are handed left or right are the headshell and glass and the mounting.  The mechanism can be fitted either side.

When I looked at the list of parts on the SA web site I could not see the individual cast part listed that I refer to so I sent them the same photo of the parts as I posted here and they replied saying I needed to order the whole assembly, as you suggest Roy.  The brass pin is listed separately however. So to get the part required it seems you must order the whole asembly @ £106.  That being said it was not available at the time.

Thanks for letting me have your last spare Roy. A precious item much coveted :)

No, and it is unlikely ever to be stocked.  Since it is so expensive and the main part is hand made, they will only make them to order.  So if you want one from their website you must place an order.  As it was not obvious from their website I have clarified this with Felix, and he has confirmed that anything not in stock can still be had but you must place an order.

Greig has now published his successful efforts in the lastest MEC UK magazine.

For those of you who haven't seen it there, he is able to supply the original cast piece now in solid aluminium with the pin in brass. Total cost £50. To do this he needs pre-orders of 20 items with a deposit for each order of £20. A very reasonable offer I think. Without the 20 deposits it won't be a goer. He states that the deposit will be refunded if he doesn't get enough orders or if you cancel before the production begins. I'm taking 2 and looking here, others make up possibly 6 orders.

Contact Greig Dalgliesh at greig.dal@tiscali.co.uk

Great work Greig.
