Title: Window motor
Post by: JL on July 22, 2010, 11:12:49 pm
Hi Everyone

I am having a problem with my window motor, I have tracked the fault down to a component (pictured below) which is a thermal overload - made in the UK by Otter controls.
When the overload is bypassed the motor works normally but when the not bypassed the window worked either intermittently or not at all. I have tracked down Otter controls but need to find out where they have a sales outlet.

I will let you know when I have further information.

Regards
John

That looks like an amateur addition intended to prevent the motor burning out.  I can't see it on the wiring diagram and if it was original, it wouldn't be from a British manufacturer.  I think you could delete it.  If window lift motors burn out it is generally because the mechanism is seized or partially seized, so you need to keep them well maintained.

There is a thermo switch in the original window motors. If it fails, it can be taken apart and the contacts cleaned. The one you show looks like a replacement. Was it mounted on the motor?

At any rate you really need to have a thermo switch to prevent overload (and fire  ::) ::))

The cut out is mounted within the motor unit and I am pretty sure that it is original or at least a thermal cut out should be there. I am waiting for a reply from Otter regarding the availability and supply of the unit. The mechanism funs freely enough and is well greased so hopefully the new cut out will cure the problems.
