Title: Avantime's in Norway
Post by: matramurena on July 27, 2010, 09:47:32 am
At the moment I am the proud owner of both a Murena and an Avantime. I would never part with the Murena of course, but might have to part with the Avantime since we are planning on moving to Norway. It is our goal to move in the summer of 2013.

So I've been looking at the cost of importing my Avantime, but that is extremely expensive!  :o The new plan is to sell the car in Holland and buy a new car in Norway, so I have been looking at the car-sites in Norway and so far haven't found a single Avantime for sale... Does anybody knows if they are even sold there in the first place?

There are just a handful of them (4-5) and they are all imported. So if you want an Avantime you should bring your current car, dont expect to find one for sale.
If you are moving there is special rules for that and might be in your favour when it comes to fees.
Im not sure exactly how these rules are now but earlier you could take your car for free if moving into Norway.

Call toll.no for information.

Thank you for the answer. So it means that when I want to drive the Avantime I either have to import one or must be extremely lucky...

There used to be a regulation that allowed immigrants to take their car to Norway without having to pay taxes on it. however this is what I found on the web-site of Toll.no

"Import of Motor Vehicles as Removal Goods

If you as owner of a motor vehicle wish to take this vehicle with you when moving to Norway and to drive it in Norway, you will have to pay duty on it. A regulation exempting such vehicles from duty expired on January 1, 2002."

So I have to calculate the costs for importing the car. With the toll-calculator on the site I came to a tax of over 10.000 Euro.......  :-\

Yep - i would think twice before moving to Norway, that is only a start of many and very expencive tax and fee system in this nation. They suck us dry 24/7 !! :-[

You could bring it in without putting norwegian plates on it, then you will have to pay 25% of its value to get it registered in the automotive system and later pay the fee when you decide to start using it. This fee wil drop as the car gets older, and on 30 years its free.

Well, we have many taxes here in Holland as well, so no big difference there.

I just saw that there actually are some Avantime's in Norway. And one of them is for sale as well!

as far as I know all foreigners who have not lived in norway previously can drive their foreign registered cars here for the first 12 months. Just like a tourist would. When this 12 month period actually begins is a bit flexible, but should be the date that you move here permanently.
If you are here temporarily you can get a permit from customs allowing you to drive with foreign plates for a second 12 month period if you want. After that, according to the customs in Norway you'll need to register the car here, or send it out of the country. To register it you probably know that involves paying a few taxes.

However, according to EFTA, European Free Trade Agreement or EØS agreement as it's called in Norway,  all EU citizens can move to Norway with their possesions without having to pay any duties or import taxes on them. I believe that taxes on cars is the second largest source of govt income behind oil revenue so govt websites don't mention anything on how new immigrants can avoid taxes. The only people I know of who have got their cars in tax free recently have had or were good lawyers

Do you maybe have any links or info regarding this issue? POur plans are to move in about two years and finding a way to import our cars without any taxes would be more than welcome!

According to Toll.no I would have to pay about 15.000 Euro's to import my current car......  :o :o :o :o :o

If I were to buy the 2,0 litre version it would be only  8) 10.000 Euro's. So I am facing a diffucult decision now. What to do?
@Jack Daniels: If you have some more information about this European agreement. (and a case of a person who won this would be best of course) I would be delighted! otherwise I might have to sell the Avantime.

I have driven the car now for about 5000 km's and I can tell that the fuel-consumption is noticably less in the 2.0 Turbo. However I almost never miss the extra power the V6 gives me. It isn't a car for quick stoplight sprints to begin with and on the motorway it's quick enough to overtake at 140 when you simply put it back in fifth...

Thought of giving you an update. Our house is now officially for sale, I can leave my job as soon as I find a Norwegian job and my wife sold about everything we own\ed so we can easily emigrate with a Sprinter-van....

So it's getting serious. This means my Murena has to be finished (a 6 year job so dar) and one of my Avantime's will have to go... I geuss we will keep the 12k km's one instead of the 140k one... Fitted some new rims to her for the summer. (the original rims are now the winter-wheels)

I have had to decline a few jobs already now since I can't afford leaving before my house is sold, but it seems they still are looking for people that do the job I do. :)

Dark green, cream leather interior.
new turbo last year and runs well, a few small fixes but as I have already headed off and the wife has her hands full with the kids, our vi is slated to go to a new home.
