Title: GPS installation on a Kuda base
Post by: Anders Dinsen on November 07, 2010, 07:47:21 am
Hi guys, see my new GPS installation :)

It occurred to me while driving one day, that the best place to have the GPS in the Espace would be in the middle of the car. That way it would be possible for both the driver and the passenger to operate it - something that I've needed a few times and then always had to remove it from the holder while driving in order to hand it over to my wife or whoever is riding with me.

So I picked up this (old stock actually, it has a small label inside with a manufacturing date in 2000!") Kuda phone base. Here's the result so far:

So far I've just used the existing suction cup mount, but I'm going to fit something like this instead:

I agree, the GPS seems to be best in the centre where the whole family can see it. I've allways had it beside the rear-view mirror with a mile long cable over the sunvisor and around the passenger seat.  Finally I got around to installing a USB contact in the roof console. I think I might install one more in the centre console between the seats next, great for charging cameras, phones and the like.

I have discovered after this installation that the power connector shown in the top photo becomes live when the car is unlocked and goes off when the doors are locked. This works well when the GPS is set to autostart and auto power off. Also if the GPS is a bit slow to start up a few secons are saved. You can also take the keys out of the car without having to touch the GPS or whatever is connected in the USB port.
