Title: Spax, am I missing something?
Post by: Oetker on November 09, 2010, 03:52:38 pm
Today I collected my new Spax shocks.
Thy look super.
(http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4786/p1020798medium.jpg) (http://img209.imageshack.us/i/p1020798medium.jpg/)

Height adjustable.
(http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/9155/p1020799medium.jpg) (http://img181.imageshack.us/i/p1020799medium.jpg/)

Also 28 clicks to adjust force.
(http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/705/p1020800medium.jpg) (http://img261.imageshack.us/i/p1020800medium.jpg/)
That is very nice because rebound en bump are adjustable so you can find a good setup for the car.
Something is a bit strange.
Aldo they are developed for the Murena, it doesn't fit like it should on the old springs.

(http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/5281/p1020802medium.jpg) (http://img585.imageshack.us/i/p1020802medium.jpg/)
Am I missing something, or do you have to play engineer yourself?

to me they look to be made for coiloversprings around 2"  ???

2 1/4 inch Coilover Springs are required. These come in many different lengths and spring rates usually in lbs. in the U.K. Spring length and rate depending on what ride height and type of use you are looking for?
With the adjustable spring platforms you can then adjust the corner weights for optimum performance.

hmmm.  I didn't want to change the coils and planned to only replace the shocks because they are at end of life.
The Koni's are a straight fit.
Bad info, it will make it much more expencive then just Koni's.
I consider my options.
Probably I make it fit by cutting of the plates from the old shocks or make something myself.

Today I collected my new Spax shocks.
They look super.

Are these for the rear or front suspension?  Everyone seems to assume the front with the talk of 2" and 2.25" coil over springs, but I think these are for the rear judging by your spring seat.  Rear springs are much larger than 2.25" diameter.  If these are for the rear they should have supplied new spring seats to match your existing coils and the new shocks.

The box say G695 and are suposed to be for the rear.
As far as I know this was the correct number.

Oetker I checked my invoice and it says SPX G695, so these are the Murena rear shocks. I fitted 10 1/2" x 2 1/4" I.D. x 250lbs. springs on mine with a flat lock/helper spring on the top to stop things coming loose. Also when fitting mine I had to machine up some nylon spacers as they did not really fit the underside of the top turret quite right.  :(

Thanks Graham for the info, I will see what to do.
Let this topic make it clear that this is not a straight out the box option, as I was thinking when I ordered them.
I presume Spax want you to buy springs from them >:(
In the list they are sold as fit for the Murena, and that is misleading, because nowhere is to be found you need the extra materials.

I sended Spax compagny a mail if they have mounting plates.
No answer.
Minus points for them.
A friend helped me producing mounting plates in very hard steel.

My top rubbers of the shocks are not very good anymore.
Found some rubbers from Ford Escort MK1 en MK2 backside voor pocketmoney.

I hope they fit.

The car has to do MOT coming week, and the I have some time to fit them

Yesterday I had some time to do the job.
First I looked if they fit.
Looks ok, no other jobs needed.
(http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/6537/p1020888medium.jpg) (http://img130.imageshack.us/i/p1020888medium.jpg/)
(http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8715/p1020889medium.jpg) (http://img221.imageshack.us/i/p1020889medium.jpg/)
(http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6014/p1020890medium.jpg) (http://img337.imageshack.us/i/p1020890medium.jpg/)
The new toprubber I bought are a bit to small.
I fitted the old ones, thay are not to bad.
Mounted all the stuff.
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/5396/p1020891medium.jpg) (http://img202.imageshack.us/i/p1020891medium.jpg/)
(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8151/p1020892medium.jpg) (http://img820.imageshack.us/i/p1020892medium.jpg/)
(http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9192/p1020893medium.jpg) (http://img253.imageshack.us/i/p1020893medium.jpg/)
The old dustcaps are useable.
Adjusted the car 4 cm lower, and tthat is about the max possible, probably a bit to much.
Now I can start looking for a front tires with a lower diameter.
It is now 195 55 15 and think about 195 45 15.
This is to compensate the lower rear.
It looks a lot better, no more high heals.
(http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/3805/p1020894medium.jpg) (http://img813.imageshack.us/i/p1020894medium.jpg/)
Shocks work O.K.
Coming spring I take the time to find the right settings.
The weather is to bad to do it now.

very nice setup. good to be able to use the old springs
the front unit G693. are they also for 2" springs ?  looks like they are height adjustable

Title: Re: Spax, am I missing something?
Post by: Oetker on January 30, 2011, 04:16:04 pm
Yes, the G693 are also designed for Fleischman springs.

Pic Brammoz

If you don't want that, you can use Spax 170-338 if you can find them.
They fit Bagheera Simca1100 and Murena.
They look like this.

but I guess they can be used without problem with torsionbars even if the torsion are a bit soft?
just order a complete set front and rear  :o  :-\ ::)

I don't know, but I guess it's possible..
I have Monroe 2732 shocks at the front, and they are a bit softer then the originals.
Makes the car a bit more comfy.

there are several topics about the upper dampermount _(front) saying it should be reinforced.
Maybe a crossbar or just adding a few extra metal will do the work?

or just adding softer spring and keep the original torsion

I don't understand the problem but maybe it's me.
The front is fine as it is.
If you put in shockabsorbers without springs  that are adjustable, it would be great.
They absorbe up and down, so you can make it stiffer by adjusting.

I believe that replacing the torsion springs for coil springs around the shocks could present a problem.

With torsion springs, the load is on the bottom suspension arm, which is mounted on the strongest part of the frame. The load vector is straight up on the inner pivot point. The twisting load is on the rear mount of the torsion bar, under the front seat.

Switching to coil springs, you move the load to the top, thus creating a twisting force that will push it in towards the car's center. The load vector is up through the mounting points of the shock, thus creating a lateral vector towards the centere of the car, from the top mount. The twisting load is around the bottom frame, where the lower suspention arm mounts, and the top mount for the shock.
I believe you need a cross brace between the top of the frames to compensate.

Maybe I can can draw a load diagram illustrating this.

Update!
OK a quick and crude scetch of how I believe the loads are. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The Murena is not heavy at the the front, but removing the torsion bars is a change in the construction that can have a unpredictable result in case of a frontal accident.
The torsion bars are mounted at the middle of the car and make the car stronger on the place where seats are mounted.
In some accidents it can protect you.
I would never change that because I don't know what the outcome will be.
My gues is that If you want the car to be more stiff, use some extra small springs on adjustable shocks wich help to improve the diving of the front, with or without crossbar.

how big are those nylon washers for the rear dampers? if you have a drawing I could have them machined at work. :-)

I mean the ones GP made. im thinking of changing my springs when I change the engine and ride height
