From what you say, it could simply be wiring, but it could also be a more serious problem like a module which is not working any more.

No I don't think that the oil level light would stop the engine from running - at least not from cranking. The solution to that would be to remove the connector to the oil level sensor as it should really be able to run without it.

I bought my Espace as a crash write-off and had it rebuilt. When it was ready to run it had to go to Renault to figure out why it wouldn't start.

It turned out to be a problem with the windscreen wiper circuit, so although the oil warning system seems a bit unlikely I wouldn't discount it yet!

I wonder if the system detects any unusual power demand before allowing start to take place?

Take a look at the section covering the immobilizer in the extract from the Renault service manual that can be found in Lennart's "Vault"

http://www.matrasport.dk/vault/Espace/JE/3441A.pdf

It provides plenty of information about re-programming etc.

right lads ive been speaking to a fella that said if im getting coms to and from the ecu that it s not that and that he has had to change in the past 5 ecn wiring looms he said people adjust the sterring height and the loom is so short that it buggers it up so if i refitthe loom under colum more than likely this is the fault, does this seem feesable to you guys? 8)

What is a "bii unit"?

Is that the computer in the passenger compartment?

P/n sounds like a Renault p/n, though one of those specific to the Espace.

That box is a CAN bus interface - either the connection to the main computer is gone (the signal wire you can see) or the box is blown. I'm afraid you have to go back to your Renault friends :(

All I have is actually in the "vault" - which I have restructured recently. Check the "vault" link at the bottom of the Espace index page here:
