Title: Restoration of a MS11
Post by: Lennart Sorth on October 11, 2006, 09:47:09 pm
The UK company Zul-Racing are currently restoring a MS11 for a client - and they have
kindly started sending me pictures of the process :

Looks so simple and elegant.

Interesting, fascinating, fabulous, fantastic - what else ?  :-)

Hmmmmm... wauw!!
It's wonderful to see that somebody has the money and energy to have such a beauty restored and that others has the passion to run a business like the Zul guys.

Magnificent.

A man+some suspension+BIG engine+four wheels = formula 1 racer from late 1960's :)

It gets better
 - we're all (well, the MECUK) invited to visit them. Just have to contact them in good time, as they are often away ... racing classic cars on tracks all over the world. What a tough job ...  :-)

They are based near Donnington Park - which would be yet another great reason to visit the area :-)

That's really nice of them!

It looks like it was fuel injected - mechanical. Look at all the fuel lines going to the trumpets. In one of the pictures, there's even a good view of an injector down a trumpet. Or am I wrong here? Fuel lines don't look like they are able to cope with any kind of pressure...  Anyone know anything about the technology?

Would be nice to visit them and have a chat...!

Indeed.

I have some other shots of (almost) the same engine here:

http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Sportsprototypes/M630/Gallery1/Med/m630_04.html

And for the sake of this thread, I have just uploaded the full versions of those pictures too, - they are scans from the original negative. Not super sharp, but that the best my old camera/lens would do :-)

The photos attached by Mr. Lennert Sorth are fantastic!  I am building a 'Tamiya' model of the MS11, and the more I learn, the more I discover I do not know; photos like these are worth their weight in gold.  If 'Zul' happens to send photos of the driver's seat before installation and you can attach them, I will sing your praises long and loud!

I will add any pictures they send me - and hopefully we'll even be able to arrange a visit.

Wether I can be there is speculative, but if only the MECUK could go, then I'm sure we could get all the pictures we like :)

Hehe.. to me it looks rather more like an areoplane then a racecar !  ;D

more like an areoplane

Excactly ! - and this was indeed the reason Matra had so much success in Formula-1.
They were used to working with aeronautics and even space-technology, which made their approach so different.

Just received two new pictures from Zul Racing - front suspension is looking more or less finished:

Hey -  joy oh joy

I just received another bunch of pictures, showing great details on the current state of the rebuild.

I wish I had the funds to have Zul Racing restore my Murena that way ... wow.

They are really at it, up there in Derby at Zul-Racing.com - just look at the
pictures I just received today .

The client owning this car btw has "several Matra Racing cars ranging from F2, Sports cars to F1"  ... interesting.

Zul Racing are very interested in any pictures that can be found of this car - it is MS11 Chassis No 2, 1968.

All my stuff is currently packed in cardboard boxes (moving to UK by Feb 1) so I cannot help, but maybe some of you have access to such pictures ?

I have recently upped the allowed attachment sizes, so a post on this forum may have up to 4 attachments, taking up a total of up to 3Mb. No single attachment may however exceed 2Mb, but that should make posting of larger pictures possible.

Thanks for posting the pictures, Lennart... they are really interesting to see. Notice the solid brake discs for example. Also the aerodynamically shaped upper A-arm is interesting to see and shows how much they were aware of aerodynamics back then. It's also interesting to see how the damper and front spring is fitted inside the chassis, perhaps in an attempt to reduce drag? The geometries look very fixed, however, and not with any of the tuning options of newer race cars. Is it the anti-roll bar we can see behind the brake and clutch fluid containers? That looks reasonably easy to replace, though, and is useful to adjust for neutral steering. Rear end seems to have more adjustment options, however...

Interesting, interesting! 8)

I went to Derby to visit Zul racing this weekend - FABULOUS!
It turned out they are even restoring yet another Matra - a M670B !

The engine was not back from the engineshop yet, but within a a month or so, both cars are expected to be tested on Donnington Park - and hopefully I'll be there too.

Here are my pictures from the visit:

Yehaa! - the MS9 engine for the MS11 is now running, and Liaz has sent me a little video of it, on the dyno. I really hope he used earplugs while filming that!

You have now  :-)

I am currently without Internet-connection (this is written (ab)using my neighbours open WiFi) so in my hurry to put the clip on the gallery, I forgot to check/change its permissions. sorry

Crank up that volume, and listen!   (the video-side is not fantastic, but the SOUND ... mmm )

The lovely MS9 engine is now fitted to the MS11 chassis !

Zul Racing have sent me another batch of pictures, and I can only say it all looks absolutely stunning. The car, the garage (with two Matra's) and the craftsmanship.

More pictures have arrived. They are (as usual) at the bottom of the gallery:

   http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Sports-Formula/Stories/Zul-Racing/index.html

These show the extra support Zul Racing have invented for the extended rollbar - The owner/driver is obviously taller than racingdrivers from the 1960'ies :-)

It looks good - and in fact quite "original".

Beautiful exhaust now fitted, as is the extra support for the (extended) rollbar.

Shakedown tests are now expected to happen mid April.

More interesting photos! I like the water pump, but just the thought of hot water running down my behind if something breaks!!? No, safety was certainly not a subject in the 60's!

Don't forget you are already sitting IN the fueltank, so to speak - so in the grand view of things, a hot bath may not be the worst that could happen :-)

Besides, waterpumps or their seals never leak .. ahem! - sorry, couldn't resist that Anders :)

nosecone is fitted and apart from wheels and stickers, the car is now finished - check the last few pictures at:
    http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Sports-Formula/Stories/Zul-Racing/index.html

(I have made the gallery somewhat smaller and more manageable.)

and ! ... <drum roll> he now ALSO has a MS120 in the garage to restore. !
Will it ever end ?

No pictures of that yet, but rest assured they will arrive.

I would say the car looks finished now .. 6 new pictures of roll-out:

But just have a look at the parkinglot behind it on 2007_0424_085419 - it is turning into an industry...

Am I the only one thinking of the film "flash Gordon" when I see this pic ?

Anyway... I SOOOOO would like to hear this thing at 7000rpm!

Anyway... I SOOOOO would like to hear this thing at 7000rpm!

It should even do 10.500 afaik ... giving some 370 hp :-)
You can see/hear the engine rebuilders video of it on the testbench here:

      http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Sports-Formula/Stories/Zul-Racing/Misc/MS9_Dyno_002.avi

I hope the owner will soon find the time, - then I'm off to Donnington :-)

BIG NEWS !!! - the MS11 will go for its shakedown test THIS WEEKEND 18-20 May at Donington Circuit, as part  of the GPlive event:

        http://www.gpliveuk.com/gplive-stars-cars/cars60s.asp

The MS9 and MS10 should also be there on display.

Rather short notice, but luckily I should be able to go on Saturday.
(Sunday I will be at the Duxford Airshow, - busy weekend.)

I/we should be able to meet up with Liaz & Co in the pit, so we can have a close-up experience of the MS11 test.

Anyone care to join me ? - somebody with a good DV camera please!

Wonderful! I would really like to be there. Was it really run by Pescarolo:

- Liaz just told me ( minutes ago) that they have encountered a problem with the MS11 engine, and for now it doesn't run. This puts the trip up there in jeopardy !

Was it really run by Pescarolo:
Oh yes.
- in fact all the Matra V12 powered F1 cars were driven by French drivers, - in the first years it was Beltoise and Pescarolo (while Stewart and Servoz-Gavin were running DFV engined cars), and from 1971 it was Chris Amon  and Beltoise.

At most races, there were only two Matra's, however occasionally there were in fact all four of them (two races in 1968 and one in 1969). Rules were somewhat different then, before Bernie took over the show.

it really IS a French car, you see :-)
See you there.
