Title: Tank strap problem JE
Post by: Anders Dinsen on March 13, 2016, 11:08:17 am
The front tank strap had corroded through, so I ordered both new, but I have a problem replacing the rear. The problem is that the nut in the chassis on the farside bolt attaching the strap to the chassis has worked itself loose and is now turning freely in the chassis. The screw end of the bolt is exposed to moisture and dirt inside the chassis, so it has gotten stuck in the nut.

It can probably not be seen in the picture below, but the nut is round in the part entering the hole in the chassis, so something above it has kept it in place. It is imossible to get a tool up to hold it, and turning the bolt either way just rotates the nut.

The rear strap is ok and the bolt is stuck in the nut, which is still kept fine in the chassis, so the tank is staying where it should, but I would at least like to tighten the bolt.

WD40 has been applied, but to no avail...

Any ideas?

Hi
I have had the same problem. I removed / cut the head of the bolt with a grinder (en ligesliber dvs IKKE en vinkelsliber), a rather unpleasant and "dangerous" job. But I succeed after a few hours of work.

A tool like this: http://www.primusdanmark.dk/ligesliber-tilbehør-p-2553.html?osCsid=nq9iiu0nmpea9pjpftgandf7g3

Regards Hans

Thanks, Hans :)
I thought of the same solution, but did not realise which tool could reach in there. I'll give it a try.

How about replacing it all with stuff that will not rust?

good gauge webbing for the strap, a bronze eyelet at the outboard end, and then a proper lashing with 3mm dyneema using that bolt-head as an anchor?

Not a bad idea... except I purchased two new tankstraps :)
