Title: Anyone using "other" pistons in their Murena?
Post by: LarsB on December 05, 2006, 07:41:09 pm
I recently found this great 505 forum.  (www.505turbo.com)
One or two of the members there were using pistons from Volvo B230FT. (96mm) I would like to know if anyone have tryed this on the NA Murena engine. I think we might need pistons with higher compresion hight? Any ideas?

kind regards
Lars Olav

Hey lars, Im in that forum too.
If you read carefully you will find that there is quite a bit of modifying to do to the block and rods to make it all work.. and V-M's big engine project hasnt been without its fair share of trouble.
The murena pistons are quite inexpensive, wheres the 230ft are not.
Further more I believe the volvo pistons are of the "domed" type, and intended for turbo use.

Dont get me wrong though. I am looking for alternative pistons myself, but for the turbo engine i am building.
If i had to buy pistons for my n/a 2.2 i would go with either the standard ones that readily avalible, or with the coshworth forged ones from politech

I realice that some modification to the rods is needed, how ever my main consern is the compression, or rater the lack of compression.

I am looking into using pistons from the B230F (non turbo) These are cheaper, and also (I think) better suited for NA applications

other concernes I have is that the Murena head might not be able to flow enough air to fill the larger cylinder.

The pistons from Simon Auto would cost at least 1500kr a pice, in my oppinion not inexpensive

Think 90 euro + freight for a complete set is expensive?  ???

Simon used to have a similar add on e-bay... thay didnt cost much more.. are you sure the price you found wasnt for forged pistons?

What about air cooled VW pistons?  They have a 22mm pin..what's a 2.2 murena???  There are 2 different compression heights for stock or stroked engines, they are available in 90.5, 92, 94 mm bores and are VERY cheap for FORGED pistons.  Just a thought.
Thanks
