Title: How many more without major surgery?
Post by: MarkN on December 15, 2006, 05:42:45 pm
Hi,

My Espace has done almost 240.000 kms without any work to its mechanical parts apart from the usual things (exhaust, brake pads, disks to be replaced next summer, etc).  :)

The engine still runs fine. No smoke not even when doing a cold start, no funny noises, nothing that would indicate any wear as far as i can tell...   :-\

Now I was wondering....
For how long can I expect this to go on?
Should I check anything?
Can I prevent anything?
How many more kms can I (normally, statistically) expect the engine to continue running as it does?
At what mileage should I expect what part to give up?  :-[

The engine of my Triumph for instance can virtually last forever if I replace its main and big end bearing shells every 80.000 kms.  :-* If instead I wait for any symptoms of wear, this will already have affected the major parts like the crankshaft.  :-[

Anybody like to share his/her experience, info or tips?

Mark

I wouldn't worry too much about a modern engine built with modern tolerances, except treat it always with fully synthetic oil and keep it well with fresh filters, regular timing belt changes etc. Same goes for the gearbox, by the way - treat it with the correct fully synthetic gearbox oil and it can probably last a long time still.
