LCD-display - Please help

I have an imported Espace -98. Suddenly the LCD display went black. It works in the starting mode (when lights are off), but when I turn on the lights, the display goes black.
Is there a light bulb involved?!? Circuits are not my cup of tea, but changing a light bulb is... I know how to take the panel off, but then - what am I looking for?

The display is supposed to dim when you turn on the lights although not to black. I think it is set to be correct for night when the lights are on.

Have you tried adjusting the display dimmer which is hidden - as in most cars - down the steering column?

If that doesn't help (it probably does, did for my wife...), I have a diagram.
