Broken cambelt
September 12, 2011, 04:52:18 PM
At 130 km/h on the Danish highway my Espace 2.2 DCI engine suddenly stopped. It just lost power and went out. No strange noises at all. I tryed to reset the fule emergency switch and to start the car, but when I attemped to start the car I could hear the starter working without any resistance at all, so I figured out the the cambelt was broken. The car is now at my favorite workshop who also replaced the cambelt resently and I'm now awaiting their verdict.  I just hope that this is a plain broken cambelt so I don't have to pay the repair myself.  The workshop told me that the 2.2 DCI engine normally do not get a lot of damage when the cambelt are broken, but there are some kind of "safety bolts" which breaks and then needs replacement.
To be continiued........................................

Best Regards
Bo

Hi there just had the same problem, removed head no bent valves. Only damage being that both rocker shafts had been bent and bolts holding shaft stretched and broken. try replacing the rocker shafts first before removing head, cost about £60 each from renault and of coarse fit new bolts. Also remember to set cams with high preasure pump as I did mine 180 degrees out wouldnt start till i re-timed it.

An update.

The belt was "eaten from one side" so there was only a third part of the belt wide left.
Right now a third party " Teknologisk institut" is investigating the root cause. My hope is that they find an error on the belt , since the belt manufator then will have to pay for the repair.
At the moment the workshop is struggeling with removing the injectors. On of them are stuck and "heavy eqipment" is ordered from France which may be able to remove the injector.
I hope that the damage is limited to the same extend as "dod9878" describes in this tread. Many thanks for your replies.
I cross my fingers and hope for the best...........  To be continiued :-)
Best Regards
Bo

My Espace is now back on the road :-)
It was only the bolts which were broken.
The timing belt and its belonging accessories is shipped to the manufactor, so I will now have to wait for their decision if they are going to pay for the repair.
Since there were no errors found on the engine I assume that they are going to pay :-)
According to the very experiend workshop the bolts always protect the engine 2.2DCI so that's a really nice feature with this engine. I saw the bolts. It's 6mm bolts with a special deformation (Breakpoint) zone.

Does anybody know if that is true only for the 2.2 DCI engine, what about your petrol engined brothers?
