Cover of the front indicator

There is a black frame on the cover of the front indicator in this photo.

Was it an option originally? Or is it a special thing painted on the original covers?

I believe there were two lens covers, I think depending on year. Mine has the same as on the picture, the black you see is a rubber seal for the glass insert. I don't think there's any advantage of one over the other... The more you look, the differences you'll see on our cars!

My car also have black rubber seal for the glass insert (model year 1982). But in the photo you can see a black frame around the whole plastic cover.
Maybe black seal is used between the cover and the front bumper...but I think it is painted on the outer surface...
