Sill Colour

The sills on my white 1.6 have been badly painted a matt black colour.  I have looked at a number of pictures on the web and many appear to have black sills and other have body colour ones.  What was original colour and what do people think looks best on the car?

All except the 'S' models would have originally been matt black.  It was done to make the car look lower and, in my opinion, looks good if properly done.
