Author Topic: 2.2dci P1882 odb code - fuel pressure problem  (Read 42780 times)

Hi All

I have a 2001 2.2dci grand espace, which drives just fine if you drive it gently. As soon as you ask it to perform it almost immediately cuts out completely, will restart straight away.

Pulled down the DTC's and only one shown P1882.

Seems to be to do with fuel pressure, any one seen this before?

My thoughts are, in no order:
1. low pressure pump blocked?
2. fuel filter blocked?
3. CR manifold pressure sensor U/S?
4. High pressure pump regulator U/S?
5. High pressure pump U/S?
6. Leak in system somewhere?
7. excessive injector leak back? (although starts fine, on first crank)

What say you guys?

Is this the same 2.2dCi you'd pulled down for rebuild after a cam belt failure John?

Just wondering if you have a leak in the fuel system somewhere following the rebuild. Renault advocate replacing with new, any of the high pressure fuel pipes that have been dismantled in order to ensure a good seal as the common rail system is operating at pressures up to 1600 bar which is nearly 23,000psi.

I've had an injector on a 2.2dCi that was leaking but the car drove without any noticeable performance difference... once, or if, you could get it started.

Presumably you have checked the EGR valve is OK?.... if either of the two diaphragms in the EGR have a small particle of carbon holding the valve partially open you can experience the same symptoms you are getting without getting a dashborad warning or a DTC. It's only if you get a more serious problem with the EGR, such as failure of the solenoid or if the diaphagms are held open a long way by a larger carbon particle or build-up that you would get a dash warning and a stored DTC.

Yes the same car, been using it daily with no problems. Done about 300 miles in it but now it throws a P1882 DTC and cuts completely, but will restart OK.

EGR fine, but i blanked it off today to see if made a difference....none what so ever!

I think it could be faulty CR manifold pressure switch, or HP pump regulator valve fault. Hopefully not the pump itself.

All 4 injectors have been rebuilt with new nozzles, tested and calibrated.

Hi All

Well I had the car diagnosed by a Bosch agent and  they found the following:

The fuel pressure would be fine below half throttle, but anything above half throttle the fuel pressure just kept rising until the car cut out to protect itself. Giving code P1882 (Fuel Rail Pressure Deviation)

By looking at the drive to the fuel pump pressure regulator valve you could see that the ecu was trying to turn the pressure down, infact the pressure regualtor was driven fully open, but the pressure kept rising.

Conclusion was a faulty fuel pump pressure regulator.

There is a very fine filter on the tip of the regulator which can get blocked and show these problems, I pulled mine out, and NO filter.

I ordered up a new regulator complete from Merlin Diesel, fitted it, and the fault is still exactly the same.

So is there a problem with the pump so that it doesn't respond to the control of the pressure regulator, or is it the fuel pressure sensor giving duff information?

These vehicles just love having time and money thrown at them.

Well the problem continues.

With the help of the wiring diagram i was able to check out the wiring to and from the engine management ECU. All checked out fine.

Just need to make sure that the pump valve is actually being driven by the ecu. From a diagnostic point of view it is, but not sure that it is physically.  ie the ecu is telling the valve to operate but i'm not sure it actually is moving.

going to reroute the HP fuel pump return line directly to the tank, a blockage in the cars plumbing could cause the problem.

going to check the injectors leak back at high revs, fine at idle.

Failing that i will have to consider scrapping the car, spent way too much money and time on it so far.

Hi

Quick update, in desperation I pulled the refurbished injectors out again and had them tested at a Bosch Agency. Turns out that although they are all OK at idle, but one of them starts to spill badly at high load. So it looks like the HP pump was being flooded by excess return from one of the injectors,  thus corrupting the pressure regulation at the pump.

So I have sent that one back to be sorted, and hopefully that will be then end of my problems.

I will let you know how I get on.

The same "old" problem then - without these injector problems and EGR problems the history would be quite different on JE and diesel engines reliability...

So I have sent that one back to be sorted, and hopefully that will be then end of my problems.

I had an injection system problem 18 months ago and spoke to a Bosch diesel specialist service centre at length. They told me that if the problem with the injector was mechanical.... such as the nozzle requiring attention then they could sort it but if it was electrical then it meant having a replacement injector because they were sealed for life.
The price they quoted for a replacement was actually almost the same as from Renault and they didn't have the CLIP or equivalent to programme the new injector calibration into the ECU.

Hope that you get it sorted soon John and start enjoying your Espace. You seem to have spent a desperate amount of time and money on it so far but hopefully it will reward you in the end.

Hi All

Finally sorted - YIPPEE!

It was a faulty injector, managed to buy a brand spanking new one and the car is as good as new.

No fault codes after a long spirited drive, and NO cutting out.

So, after having all four injectors refurbished, a new pump regulator, a new pressure switch, and then finally replacing one of the refurbished injectors with a new one, after a further injector test revealed a leaky one at high load, all is well.

great to hear!  - isn't it just typical, replaced (refurbished) parts are the last you expect to go wrong. Been there, done that.
