hi there, just bought a 2001 g/espace as a non runner with alleged turbo problems.
i was just wondering if this turbo is exclusive to the espace or can be salvaged from other renault models,i.e. lugana or even v/hall movano etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.cheers Ian

The turbo used on the Espace (and other Renault's that used the G9T 710 engine) is a Garrett GT1549P and is readily available from any number of turbo suppliers at about half the price that Renault charge. Many suppliers also offer service exchange at even less money.

BUT.... there were some changes made during 2001 so you will need to quote the VIN but preferably get the details from the existing turbo ID which is stamped into the aluminium.
It will be either 701164-0002 for the earlier versions or 725071-0002 for the later ones from 2001 on.
Knowing that number is especially important if you are going to try to obtain one from salvage sources

From memory Wink that part number is the front brake pads for Espace III's equipped with 305mm vented discs and Lucas calipers.... so V6 and 2.2 diesel
BUT... also on Avantime so the year is dependent upon model/variant.
So 2000 to 2002 for the Espace's and from May 2001 for Avantimes... except for 2.0 Turbo which was from November 2001.

Hi.ok just got the car into garage....turned the key and away she went.the whooshing noise is from a pulley somewhere in the serpentine belt area.the problem with the brakes is a broken front vented disc.the pulley noise is not there all the time and can come and go if you switch air con off and on.ie putting more load on the belt.ive phoned to get price for discs and seems to be a bit of confusion about 288mm and 302mm discs.guess ill just need to pull discs off and measure a bit more accurately unless anyone here has a better idea of what is standard fitment.any help welcome

Am i wrong if i say that Espace JE upto 09/2000 have either 280mm or 288mm (engine dependant) and all Espace after 09/2000 have either 288mm or 305mm (engine dependant) - the 2.2 dCi have 305mm - believe this is true Smiley but i cannot say i am 100% sure.
My V6 2000 mod (pre 09/2000) have 288mm

Tom (renaultbiler) is correct and as I mentioned in my reply to Anders' "test" question which was rather coincidentally regarding brakes..... all V6 petrol and 2.2dCi's have 305mm vented discs from Sept 2000 so yours needs the 305mm. The ones from Euro Car Parts are good quality made by OEM suppliers.... I have them on mine Cheesy

Regarding the noise from the accessories belt train.... if it's only present when you switch on the air-con it could possibly be the air-con compressor that is the cause of the noise rather than the extra load causing the alternator, idler pulley or tensioner pulley to be noisy.  Have you checked that you are getting chilled air once you turn on the air-con on a low temperature setting? If not then there could possibly have been a leak in the system and the compressor has little or no refrigerant to pump causing it to be noisy. If it does need re-gassing then an air-con specialist will often put an additive in the refrigerant that shows up any leak with a UV light. Hopefully it won't be the compressor itself that is on it's way out.
You should maybe also check the crankshaft pulley.... the rubber vibration damper failed on mine recently after 86,000 miles.... although the noise was definitely more than a whoooosh!!!

Hi and thanx for the info........the noise from the drivebelt area is not there constant.more on tickover and goes away with a rev..........then sometimes not there at all............when it was making the noise i switched on aircon and it got louder...............switched aircon off and noise dissapeared...then came back 2 minutes later.........im gonna take the belt off and check the tensioners and idlers........tried the usual trick of wd40 on belt to see if noise went but made no difference...............maybe a sealed bearing in an idler/tensioner?.........whatever is noisy doesnt seem too serious....well not turbo as i was told when i bought it.According to reciepts in glove box the engine had a £3250 rebuild 6 months ago by renault main dealer so cant be too much wrong with it.Im just going to tackle the brakes and ill let you know if i find the cause of the noise.cheers Ian

You have won a free DIY cleaning of your neighbors EGR valve!

Same applies to the V6's BTW. These discs are enormous....

I thought you said that you couldn't offer a prize Anders?..... so I didn't expect to be having to do community service Wink
So pleased that I passed your little test otherwise what else would it have been?.... diffuser clean and rear brake pad change as well?
Think I'll check the rules more thoroughly before participating again  Wink Grin Grin

i've given up trying to remove it with engine in situ and have started taking engine out.

Renault advocate taking the engine out to replace the turbo anyway. If I remember the details of the Technical Note correctly there is an oil feed pipe that apparently cannot be refitted properly whilst the engine is in situ without serious risk of the pipe or joint fracturing causing oil starvation to the turbo and resultant consequences.

If I can get time to put my computer back into the same state it was in before one of the kids came home from university I'll pull off the Technical Note covering the 2.2dCi turbo from my old Renault Dialogys system.... it needs old versions of Quicktime, Java and Acrobat to run and my son updated Quicktime to get itunes to operate.... why do kids always seem to have to mess with your machine when they have their own to screw with?
