2002 "The Race" 2.0 16v Auto

« on: March 06, 2006, 03:57:03 pm »

Hi Eveyone I am in the UK and have just found this forum and I am hoping someone can help me out.

I have a 2002 model 2.0 Petrol Automatic "The Race"

2 weeks ago it the gearbox started jumping into safe mode, after sending into renualt dealers for computer check, the gearbox oil was changed, and it was fine for just 2 days, car was back into the garage last Thursday and today I have been advised the roblem is with the electronic gear shifter as the gearbox has been pressure tested and has no leaks. The bill is going to be around £700 to have this part replaced and i was wondering if anyone kne what this part was and would this be a concivable problem with the auto box.

this is a beautiful car but I am now considering selling as the bill just seems to be huge,

Afraid I dont know how to add a picture ?

Any help gratefully recieved
Robbie

I think I would get a second opinion from an auto transmission specialist as it's a little too easy for Renault to pick the most expensive part off the shelf.

However my 3.0 24v - which I believe has a different box - had to have a new computer when a helpful professional steam cleaner filled the computer housing with water and wiped out the compter. Yes it was £700.00 and unfortunately it required a Renault only diagnostic computer  to figure out the problem, so an auto trans specialist may just shake his head and send you back to Renault... The auto box used on the 2 litre 4 cyl engine is indeed different from the one on the 24 valve V6. The former is a Renault/PSA creation, the latter is a ZF 4HP20 and generally is very robust.

Whether it is electronics or mechanics is difficult to say, but I have been told by my automatic transmission specialist that only Renault diagnostics tools can read the Renault gearboxes, even if the gearbox is the same as the ones PSA use. So if it's electronics, only Renault can diagnose it.

I agree with Will that you should seek a second opinion.

Good luck!!

Many thanks for your replies guys

Have had the gearbox checked again on the Renault computer and it is indeed the Gearbox ECU (Hydrhaulic switch) which has failed. Good news is that Renault have agreed to cover half the cost of replacing it, this on a 4 year old car that was bought via private sale, so chalk one up for Renault.

Still going to cost nearly £400

Hope to be back on the road again soon
