I'm a real donkey!

WWW
« on: March 06, 2010, 11:36:39 am »

Year ago, I started a register of Bagheera's.
Still to be found on my old web site, here : http://www.matra-bagheera.com/Register/register.html

Today, nearly 500 Bagheera (not all surviving) are known on this register

Enough to understand the production ?
Not quite so ...

One of the issue is that most of the people limit themselve to the chassis number.

As you all know the chassis number is stamped on front of the windscreen, on the passenger side of continental Bagheera's

2 other numbers stamped on the chassis are usefull to know :

Assembly number
In the engine bay, a tiny plate is welded on with a number refering to the chassis plate assembly.
Location on a Serie 1 :
(one of my 1975 S model)

Location on a Serie 2
( My 1979 Bagheera X)

Country specific number
With a slighly different sequence than the previous one, the country specific code refers to the car being assembled for a country specific market
Location
In front of the driver side, on this little horizontal area

Country specific codes :
FRA = France of course
SUI = Swiss
AUT = Autrich
BEL = Belgium
ITA = Italy
ALL = Germany

And thanks to Andy, I know now that AN0 or ANG seems to be the UK specific ones
(Sorry Andy but my picture is too bad to tell more that what we saw on Baggyrouge)
Still don't know about Norway cars or other countries

Again, the sequence is slightly different than the chassis number that seemed to have been stamped just before dispatching the cars

Don't assume that your Bagheera is displaying your country code.
My Yellow Serie 1 S is actually a French model

I tend to believe that Bagheera's were produced in batches for country specific market
For instance, between 7X406992 and 7X407236, I only know chassis number coming from UK without being affirmative on the country specific code. That would be a huge batch of about 250 cars !

Could I ask you to check your numbers in order to clarify this part of Matra history ?

Thanks in advance !

These are the numbers on my car, a Talbot Matra Bagheera 1980:

Chassis number       X6552AX555409
Country number      46924ALL
Assembly number      47199
Stamped on seat      08MAI79
Written on door         X2 ALL

I also have details on 104 Bagheeras in Sweden - registration, chassisnumber, colour, sunroof or not, owner, in traffic or not, etc
But I don´t have the country number or the assembly number for these cars.
The Bagheera was never officially sold in Sweden. But a batch of some 60 new cars intended for Finland ended up in Sweden 1975 and was sold by a Simca dealer. The rest of the Swedish Bagheeras are private imports.

Wonderfull : first Danish Bagheera known.
From my parts manual, they appears as "DK" versions.
I presume there were Norvegian and Finnish version too since I see them described

Hi
I just read this thread, and then checked the Numbers on my Bagheera.
I know from my danish car registration that the car was frist registred in Denmark in 74, so original sold from dealer in Denmark.

And when comparing my chassis number to Lars’ Gold 74, only the last digit is different, mine ends with “7”, the rest is a match.

Chassis nr.: X3550 4 X105367
Assembly nr.: 069226
No number with country code.

Best regards Frederik
