New exhaust "straight through" - good sound!

« on: March 28, 2010, 03:59:11 pm »

Following several recent discussions I have taken some pictures of headlights fitted to Right Hand Drive Bagheeras (and some others). I realise that this of interest only to the 1/3rd of the world who drive on the left side of the road (yes, that many!). Apologies therefore to the other 2/3rds!

Apart from the lamp manufacturer's name the pictures try to show whether there are any "kick-up" sectors in the glass and any "marker arrows" showing the side of the road for which the glass is designed. Until today I did not realise that Cibie marked their lights in this way and even now I am assuming what these arrows mean. I did  not see any arrows on the non-Cibie lamps.

1) Yellow car (Baggy Joe, ex-Germany, 1977, but now fitted with Cibie lamps said to be from a Renault 12. It has a lever that rotates the bulb to give left or right "kick-up" and no special patterns in the glass. The glass is concave and has a double ended arrow. 2 pictures

2) Baggy Grey, 1977, original Hodec RHD conversion. The headlights have never been changed so we know this was the "official" RHD headlight. Cibie, concave glass with a leftward pointing arrow (for those driving on the left side of the road (i.e. Right Hand Drive). No means of rotating the bulb (2 pictures)

3) eBay Baggy - I bought the parts the successful bidder did not want. The lights are SEV Marchal. The car was Right Hand Drive when sold but not a Hodec conversion. No direction arrow but it has a "kick-up" on the left side of the glass as do the Cibie for Right Hand Drive. So is this perhaps a SEV Marchal version of the Cibie unit? I need to try it after dark and see which way the kick-up goes. Maybe it is an alternative to the Cibie which I believe is no longer in production although Renault owner's clubs seem to be able to get them (R12 and R16 UK cars used them too.) (3 pictures)

4) Other rectangular headlights non-Matra type but useable in an emergency with some minor adaptation. These pictures will have to be attached to my next email as I have exceeded the maximum allowed!.

4.1) Fiat 126, 650cc, 1983(?). Made in Poland for the UK with Right Hand Drive. S.I.E.M. made the lights which hare a very poor light output (it is not a quick car!) Leftward pointing arrow (UK?). Smaller than Bagheera lights but could be used. (2 pictures)

4.2) Jeep Wrangler, 1994(?) official Chrysler Right Hand Drive conversion. Cibie with leftward arrow. Also smaller units than a Bagheera but more powerful than the Fiat 126. Difficult to say how much better than a Bagheera as you are seated higher and the two driving lamps make a big difference on main beam! (2 pictures).

As a dyed in the wool Citroen man, only here incognito, I was going to suggest 2CV headlamps from the 1970s, when they were rectangular................. but a quick search of the main 2CV specialists suggests  they're not availabe new any more.
I think Cibie was the main supplier, but there would have been at least one other, as Citroen always dual sourced their components.

That looks like a right-dipping lens to me.

Sorry that I have taken so long but I have this evening done some testing of LHD and RHD Bagheera headlights. These are the answers...

SEV Marchal, convex glass, left hand drive, kick up to the right.
Three pictures..

Cibie, concave glass, right hand drive, kick up to the left.
Three pictures...

Conclusion..
a) If you want headlights for right hand drive, like the UK, Eire or Australia, you must use Cibie with concave glass.

b) All the SEV Marchal lights (with convex glass) I have tested are for left hand drive mainland Europe or North America.
