Hi,

It's really quite easy to change the rear wheel bearing on the Espace JE (2001 Y-reg Grand Espace 2.2 dCi) in my case.
The wheel bearing is a totally integral part that contains the wheel hub too. The downside is that it's quite expensive. Cheapest I saw was ~£50 on eBay up to £100. Local car parts shop wanted £155. I bought my korean bearing from Eurocarparts for £74.

I'll keep posting a few more posts with pictures now...

Take the wheel off and the caliper too. But unlike me, before you take the caliper off, undo the two torx bolts that hold the brake disk to the hub.  Roll Eyes  Cool

Once the Torx bolts are out, tap the back of the disk with a hammer gently. The disk should pop off, easy peasy. If you're changing disks only this is as far as you need to go. Just stick the new disk on.

Then use a knife to pry off the dust cap. Just tap the knife gently with that all conquering hammer. Use a scredriver for the last part. Pop it off.

Inside you'll find a 32mm nut that's been locked down by hammering a part of it into a groove. I bashed the locking out with a screwdriver, centre punch and an 8mm spanner.

Then undo the 32mm nut. You'll probably need a breaker bar to do this as it's tightened to 170Nm.

Tap the back of the wheel hub with the almighty hammer and the whole assembly should pop off the axle. In my case the back of the bearings were left on the axle, but again, a few taps with the hammer saw it come out without a problem.

Clean the axle up.

Look with disgust at your old bearing/hub.

Admire the new shiny bearing/hub.

Slide the new wheel hub and bearing onto the axle. Tighten the nut to 170Nm.

Then I used a screwdriver and the God-like hammer to lock the nut in place by bashing it into the groove.

Refit the brake disk allowing the two conical torx nuts to work their magic by tightening them a bit at a time then tightening the other one a bit more. You know what I mean.  Cheesy  Kiss

Put the cleaned dust cap back on.

Refit the caliper, and put the wheel back on.

Remember to pump the brake pedal several times to push the brake pads back onto the brake disk.

Enjoy your new quiet Espace, well I did anyway.

Huge thanks to jack daniels who spurred me on with this, and probably saved me £100 or more. Thanks!!

If you're in a hurry and you know where your tools are, I think you can do this in 30 minutes. I think it took me 1h to 1h15min to do it all without any stress.

Great guide!

My left rear wheel bearing gave up yesterday.
I think, or I hope, that my wife must have hit a big hole on the road.
From complete silence, to "wobbling" tire it only took just 30-40 km of driving.

A new original wheel bearing is now on is way... Setting me back around 300 Euro.

unlucky!

If your car is over 5 years old then it probably pays to have a spare rear bearing at home, I paid 89 euro + post 6 months back.

By the way, are you sure the wheel nuts are not loose? ( 100Nm )
It seems a bit strange that the tire began wobbling so suddenly. You could try backing off the wheel bearing nut and re-tightening it to 170Nm, incase the nut has loosened or moved a bit.

does both the tire and wheel wobble together?

The car is from 1999.

Pretty sure it is not a loose wheel nut.
There are hardly any balls left in the bearing...

It is strange, that the bearing "died" so suddenly. - It must be because of a big hole in the road.

Pretty cheap! - did you buy at ebay?!?

ebay seller:          teile-tim_de.
bearing brand:     Mapco, made in germany.

for some of the bearings to escape, the bearing assembly may have come loose or they have just disintegrated. If the vehicle is from '99 then it must be at least the second unit on there now.
Let us know if there are any chinese text on the bearing when you get it out.

incidentally, I just received a set of 2 rear disks and a pad set from ATP via ebay for 64.50 euro + 24.50 euro post. Disks are PEX, made in germany.
The "EBC" disks on the car are down to 9.55mm, the Biltema pads still look new thickness. Im sure the disks have accumulated less rust with these biltema pads.

Here Finland, Espace is unusual car. Car spare shop know that car poorly. My car is Grand Espace V6 1999. And in ABS. But spare shop offer rear bearing with ABS 7/2000-> . Not in 1999. Its 2000 model same bearing with 1999 model?

(sorry my bad english, Again)  Wink

yes, the bearings are the same.
one will have an ABS ring, one will not have an ABS ring.
If your car has no ABS then you can still use the bearing in the picture.

. What is 7701417649 ?

for this you can use normal wheel bearing grease. It is a sealant to keep water out. Wipe a generous amount around the area where the cap goes.
