There is many examples of people buying OBD tester thinking they can get access to "everything" and that is not the case, and the car is blamed for not being compatible, in order to get a complete image of a problem OBD alone is often not enough.

Renault does their part of the OBD compliance but puts no more work in it than that as they clearly focus on developing along with their own fault finding tool instead, and i cant say i blame them.

This post has taken quite a turn. I had no idea.  Its interesting that in the weeks since I disconnected the air mass meter, that the car has worked faultlessly. I would love to be able to check if the air mass was dropping on the side after the meter (due to badly fitting or split pipework maybe) and before the engine inlet, but on the JE0K engine, the throttle body is so well buried at the back of the engine, you can't even reach it. I guess I need it up on a lift and the floorpan plastic removed to even see where the pipework goes. There is certainly no way you can see or reach it when the car is on the ground from under the bonnet. Another in the long list of many very stupid designs used on the espace.  It was definitely never designed to be worked on by any normal mechanic.

Its working, so I am going to just leave it alone...

just thought I would let you guys know - 5,500 more miles and no issues since we unplugged the mass meter. For two years I had constant issues that renault insisted were related to the meter or the EGR valve - all gone now since we unplugged the mass meter.

After this post started i had a similar fault on a 2003 Avantime with same engine (G9T Espace engine bay) - intermittent and often weeks or days apart it came back with air mass meter fault and/or notice of lack of intake air.
Cause was blown intercooler, hardly visible (only trace of oil on it followed by collection of oil underneat it). Replaced intercooler and it has since been ok.

Thats interesting. I am sure intercooler on m espace is OK, but I will get it checked. There has to be some reason for all this despite renault being unable to figure it out.

If you see traces of oil in the area below intercooler it might be leaking (intake air always contains some small amount of oil on turbo diesel engines). Someone with a smoke machine (automotive technitian with a smoke machine like "smoke pro") will test it efficiently without taking it out - it is sitting between radiator and AC condenser so its impossible to inspect visually in place.
