Hi,

I'm new to this forum and also new to Renault ownership! I have recently purchased a 2001 Espace 'The Race' 2.2DCI.

I bought it cheap on the basis that there was a fault - I was told it had a water pump fault however once I got it home I soon realised that the water pump as not the problem. Looking through the paperwork I see that it had a new water pump recently to resolve an overheating problem. I'm now thinking that it was the overheating which caused what I suspect to be a head gasket failure.

There is clouds of steam bellowing out of the exhaust especially when cold and the water level is dropping very rapidly (put 4.5 litres in this week). The oil level has not changed but it is starting to show signs of a milky glaze on the oil filler cap so I have stopped driving it for now.

The main problem is that there is very high pressure in the coolant which has burst the passenger side heater matrix.

I was initially thinking of trying K-seal or Steel seal but since I love the car which is in great condition I would really like to get the car done properly as I will be keeping it for a number of years.

My question is if I pay to get the head gasket replaced, how can I ensure that it is done properly and will last? I'm thinking it would be a good idea to get the head skimmed as it may be warped from the overheating. Also I understand that new head bolts are a must? Would it be worth asking the garage to use special gasket sealant or is this not recommended?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Your engine is little different from most these days. Head bolt replacement is expected as they stretch & can become long & weak. The head itself needs to be checked to see if it is flat /warped or cracked by pressure testing. No point in skimming if ok it just adds to the compression. I recon the water pump failed & leaked, the car was driven with no coolant & baked, this excessive heat has caused the head gasket to fail.
If there is a diesel workshop in your area then it would best be done by them or maybe they can recommend someone. As long as the replacement parts are quality & not cheap chinese quality then all should be well.

Thanks for your response Brian.

Its going in to a Renault specialist that has done the job before. They are going to get the head pressure tested and skimmed if necessary so hopefully all will be ok.

Unfortunately the high pressure from the pressurised coolant has blown both matrices which are both leaking badly so I guess this will have to be done st the same time.

At least I should now have some decent heat in the cabin and the piece of mind that the engine once fixed should give me a good few years more service.

I've seen these cars advertised with well over 200k on the clock so theres hope yet!

Many Thanks,
