Hi I am new to the forum. Hope someone will be kind enough to help. I have a 1999 2.0ltr petrol with what I believe is an AD8 auto box. This thing has a pressed steel sump with a couple of single plugs in it. NOT  the conbined level / drain plug which many of them seem to have. There is a short dip tube with a rubber blanking plug under the air filter box. I am asuming there is a way to establish if the fluid is low. I know renault think it's not safe to let the peasantry lose on their works of art but I am a qualified (lapsed) mechanic and not completely stupid.
There is no obvious leak but the car is not young (100,000m) and the warning light with an electrical symbol would come on occasionally and the car would refuse to change into top gear. If  I turn off the engine for 10/15 min it will usually go back to normal.  It  has begun to happen more frequently lately so I want to eliminate the obvious. very grateful for any help. Thanks

Hi Steve, your gearbox is going into limp mode, it reverts to third gear when there is a fault. i had a problem with my espace,  (1999 2 ltr 8 valve with ad4 transmission) very similar to this about three years ago, had it checked by local specialist who advised fault codes present relating to oil pressure, he advised to try a new sensor which i got him to do and its been ok since. not cheap though, sensor was £160 but sorted it.
you could check the oil level first the info on doing this is in the espace vault i think, the tube you mentioned is the filler but there is no dip stick, level is determined by fluid leak off from the triangular socket plug on the bottom of the sump, the other is the drain.
i would check the oil level first or change the oil then if fault is still present get the fault codes read and go from there, regards paul.
