Loose paint on the A-pillars

Is there anyone here who has repaired loose paint and paint damage on the A-pillars? The galvanizing makes the paint stick very badly.
On my car has paint loosened to a large extent on the inside of the A-pillars, against the windscreen.
Do I have to remove the windscreen to get this done properly?
What treatment should I use for the pillars?

You can find photos on the forum whiches show rust under the windscreen. It can happen, if your windscreen was changed in the past and someone did a bad job.
Some Murenas have corrosion problems at the A-pillars. Probably air bubbles were trapped there during the process of galvanization and now it can be a weak point. You can also find photos of it in other topics. I think it is not so common.

My car was ok, I found very small rust during the restoration and I did not have any problems at the A pillars.

I used two component epoxy primer to the bare metall which has very good adhesion on galvanized surface and you can use it as a filler. If you go to a car paint shop, they can help you what should be used.
And be careful when you remove rust. Try to minimize damage to the adjacent zinc coating.

I fear that I have to remove the windshield to get repaired paint damage. This is a bonded windscreen I assume?
It does not look like there is rust on the A-pillars, but the zinc coating is exposed.

Also get the foam out of there with a thick wire en put waxoil in.

Before painting use a etch-primer to get bonding on the sink plate.
Another product that works  is fosfor acid to etch the sink-plate.
HG did a good job for me, it is fosfor acid 8 Euro 0.5 litre.
Also Fertan will do a good job there.




leave it for 24 hours an then wash with water.
The black is converted rust.

Then primer.



After that I painted with a good paint.
Still good after 6 years.

Nice job! My cars damage to the A-pillars are not so bad, as far as I can see there is no rust ............. yet, but the paint has come loose on the inside against the windshield.

But Oetker, you did not take out the windshield, if I understand you right?

No, it was replaced before XX years ago by Carjoy.
I know that by replacing, they clean and paint the kit area.
The welder did a very good job and keeped the window in doing it.
If the windscreen is never replaced by your car the kit would be vey dry.
It starts leaking in the down corners.
If you look under the dash you can sometimes see light to the corners.
Most of the time the roof starts coming loose to.
That results in leaking from above corners windscreen.
The best thing to do is get the windscreen out and now you there fix the roof as well.
The windscreen has to be out to get the roof of.
Use watertight rivets if you do so and a PU kit.

Down corners rust.


It is unbelievable how easy the old kit comes of.



Sidewindow almost fall out by itself.


However if the windscreen is done before it wan't be so easy getting it of.


Here you see a pic of the roof.
It is glued in between the screen and the frame.


On the other hand, this car had some very slight bubbling in the corners.


I schatched it out a bit and put some Fertan in it.(rustconverter).
After that I put kit in between the glass and the frame all around closing the gap.


No more leaking and the frontscreen is locked in place.
This is done in 2008 and still OK
