Useful film about drive shafts / drive shaft joints and cuffs and installation of these, also Murena.

Some may have seen this before?

Original rubbers are harder to find.
I replaced  some with universal rubbers.
They don't last long if you don't buy good quality.
They are very flexible and you can easy install them without seperating the tripods with a cone or a airtool.

The original is not suited for the airtool.

What type of gaiters did you end up using Herman ? I have discovered that I need to replace one on my left hand driveshaft, And I really don't want to have to replace them again any time soon!

After replacing the one in the above picture  2  times, I ordered one at Carjoy.
That one is still on the car for some years now.
That is sometime ago so don't know if they are still available.

The 1.6 I placed new old stock axles.

The original boots are good quality.
As far as I know they were used on Renault Alpine to.

I have just rebuilt mine and just got the best universal cv boots I could get in the uk which are a Lucas part. These were then cut to the right size after stripping the originals no idea on the longevity. I did make this yellow holder that made life a lot easier and used the pry bar pictured to roll the can open.

I think he just buys them in from Simon.  I have not found the quality to be very good, the last ones only lasted a couple of years.

I stopped using original gaiters. They don't last very long.
5 years ago i used an universal gaiter, just like Oetker.

I made an expantion tool to slip the gaiter over the tripod.

(hamer is not part of the operation).

First soften the gaiter in hot water, and with a bit of percuasion you can aply the gaiter.

I shortened the metal can, and secured it by hamering the edges.

A big downside of what i did is that the tripod is not held in place. (because i cut the end of the can off)
Mounting the trailing arm is challenging because you have to compless the spring in the tripod all the time, during handling the trailing arm.

How are the driveshafts removed from a 2.2?

Hello Perry,

You have to remove the trailing arms from the car first.  The long one also has a support bearing in the sump casting, and you will need to slacken off the hook bolts holding the bearing, turn the heads 180 degrees and the bearing will slide out along with the shaft.  The long shaft is not fastened into the diff. but the short one has a spring clip and sometimes that gets seized in or broken and it won't release the drive shaft.  If that happens you will have to remove and strip the differential which means removing the transaxle first (complete with short shaft).  You then have to release the shaft from the inside, for which there is a special technique.  Hopefully the shaft will come out in the first place.

I have found some variations of play in the 3 bearings on the tripod/spider on the long driveshaft on my 2.2 Murena whilst stripping to install a new gaiter and can.
Does anyone know of a supplier or sourced one of these tripod assemblies or know of any part numbers. Might help if anyone knows if it was a Citroen, Renault or Chrysler/Talbot part.

Picture attached and spec with measurements as accurately as I can (using a digital caliper to measure to 100th mm)
Spec:
A= Number of teeth, splines 25
B= Roller case outer diameter 33.9 mm (poss 34)
C+ Roller case depth 14mm
D= Spider thickness 30.4 to 30.6mm
