On the tray below the windscreen are two numbers.  One is stamped into the tray and is clearly the VIN which agrees with the UK registration documents.  There is another number on a riveted tag which is certainly not the engine number on the documents nor on my engine.  it is sure to raise queries when I eventually take the car for Australian registration so I may possibly remove it unless it serves some purpose.

As you state the stamped number is the Vin chassis number, i believe the riveted plate will be the original Matra production chassis number. If it were mine I would leave it attached.

Yes, it is the vehicle number, VINs were shared between Murenas and Ranchos, but that number is unique to the Murena and may be required when ordering parts.
