Guys,

I'm hoping for a quick answer here. Apparenty my car is fixed and I'm supposed to pick it up tonight. YAY!
However, the guy fixing it and my girlfriend (who's had a chance to listen to the engine) are agreeing that it's very quiet when it's cold (YAY!!!), but once it warms up there's a noise coming through.

Anyone know why this is?
Is it normal (85,000 miles)?
What can i do about it?
Should I worry?

Thanks!!  Cool

Wanted to add that apparently the noise only appears when idling and the engine is warm. When the engine is warm and revving, it disappears.

Sounds like something oil-related to me..?!  Huh

 Hi joker
afraid its not much help but our 2000 2.2dti does the same thing, its a sort of rattling / rumbling noise from the timing belt end of the engine, the noise is only there when the clutch is down( when car is slowing down ) and stops as soon as the car stops engine still running, accelerate and the noise stops. Its troubled me since buying the car in november but does not seem to have any affect on the running of the car, probably until somthing large and expensive falls off.

Hope it helps knowing you are not alone.    Dave M.

... and stops as soon as the car stops engine still running
Then *your* problem doesn't sound like an engine problem.
How about driveshaft or brakes ?

 Thanks Lennart
This crossed my mind, but the noise is only apparent when slowing down at junctions and lights, rev the engine while freewheeling and noise stops. It sounds like a slack belt but both timing and fan belt seem fine, the noise is worst at first start in a morning.
