Hi there, thanks for all your answers so far, my next question is, to turn your side lights on you twist the stalk once, for headlights you turn this stalk again, for full beam at this point you then pull the stalk down, agreed!

So what is supposed to happen if you turn the stalk once to activate the side lights, then push the stalk down, I get headlights..... Does everyone have two options for the same thing? or am i missing a point or something?

Plus my headlights lights  bounce so much that it looks like they flicker, has anyone cured this? If so how?

That is a classic Talbot-Simca idiosyncracy. My Mums old Simca 1100 had the same stalks as my Murena and I find it quite charming.

You need some new rods for your headlights, try matra-magic.co.uk

No it isn't wrong, it is exactly as it should be.

The rods which Antony mention are the ones connecting the headlights to the lever that lifts them.

As Anthony and Anders mention, flickering lights are most commonly caused by wear in the small connecting rods, - however it could also be caused by the hinges and the stability of the plastic wheel-arc cover on which they sit.

For a long time, I was driving around with the middle fibreglass inset loosely in place (the one than contains the battery and sparewheel). I was investigating the hoses to the radiator, and therefore didn't refit the rivets for quite some time. This caused the lights to flicker quite a bit.

Maybe you have a rivet missing ?

I will look in to the headlights tomorrow, but im still not sure why you have two different stalk configurations with the same result? I was thinking that maybe one was to dip the headlights or something?

It's 70s french design! Don't question it.

I use it if I know I want to lift the headlights at someone, ie my kids (or a pretty girl crossing the road...). I leave the side lights on and flick the switch down quickly for a flash. I find it easier than rotating the stalk to achieve the same thing.

looked in to the rivets for the spare wheel holder, guess what, 7 missing, put some today, cant wait use it to see if its better!!!

I tried out my car in the dark (No idea of speed, see new thread) and after replacing many (not all) of the missing rivets there seems to be less bouncing of the lights, also far less noise. I borrowed an old rivet gun from work which was very good but was just too big to get in to do all of the (this thing was massive, i need a small hand held one). Also i need two nuts to tighten my battery down with as i've lost them and all the others i find seem the wrong thread? small improvements...
