Murena and Multipla - I like it 3 abreast!

« on: April 11, 2007, 01:06:26 pm »

Now I have had the rear bumper fixed, and the front corner piece replaced, the car is looking much better.
So, I took it to a local race car preparation place for their resident engine expert to give it the once over. After 3 hours of his, very expensive, time he has made it run MUCH better.

Apparently it had the wrong dizzy cap and rotor arm, meaning that the contact to the top of the rotor arm had worn completely away. He replaced that and the plugs and then set the max dizzy advance to be 35degrees. He always sets that rather than the static timing.

Then he balanced the carbs and set the mixture. The car runs so much better and feels much more responsive at light throttle openings. I'm hoping for better economy too.

He also runs a rolling road so I'm going to book it in there for him to play with the jetting of the carbs and a final power figure.

The only remaining problem is the stupid emergency headlight lifting cable that the bodyshop broke. I might just remove it completely rather than give the car back to them.

Just thought I'd share my pleasure with you...

Great to hear that you've found a trustworthy person to tune your car.

Hmm... good idea, but must be difficult as it can't be done with the engine idling and the vacuum advance will have to be sucked to maximum advance.

Do you know if you have the S-distributor or the original one?

These charts are from Bernhard's site http://www.technikhomepage.de/kfz/elektrik/verteiler.html:

Zero advance is 10 degrees, so that's only 30 degrees max on the S-distributor. The standard distributor is a few degrees less.  Your 5 more will surely give you some boost, but you need to be more careful with fuel octane ratings...

I have replaced my cap and rotor recently, though the carbon contact is still working. With the price of a set, there is little reason not to.

It is very hard to find someone trustworthy, especially with these machines. This guy tunes old F1 cars, so should know a bit about engines.

I don't know how he set the advance and I always run it on 97RON petrol, at least.

Mine isn't an S, so I guess it is a standard dizzy. I spoke to Roy about this and his thoughts are that the differentl dizzy on the S was just down to stock reasons and not a performance mod.

Hmm, not unlikely but the distributor was part of the prep-142 upgrade (which mine received in it's early life) and besides during 1983, Matra produced both S-Murena's and standard 2.2's and I have never heard of an S-distributor on a standard Murena. But then again, since the difference isn't visible except from the stamped in part number, it is possible that it has gone unseen and there are some 2.2's driving around with the "wrong" distributor.

Have you been able to find space for filters and airhorns?
Mine is on DHLA 40's and there is just barely room for some tiny filters, but not for any airhorns

No, mine are fitted with tiny filters and one of the things the tuning guy said was it could do with bigger filters or horns.
He did a gas analyser test with the filters on and removed and there wasn't much difference in the mixture, so they may not be that restrictive.
You're using Ramflos aren't you?

I now know how it's done as yesterday I got this very informative book:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1903706912/026-3234370-1423609

Now, we can just be happy that this is not the type of ignition we have:
