What Wheels ?

Can anyone tell me what alloys wheels wil fit the Rancho - I have been told that Peugeot wheels will fit it and also Fiat Alloys will fiot it, bu I have no ida if this is correct or not.

Also, is it true that the 1.5 litre diesel engine from a Talbot Horizon  will fit the Rancho ?

I have 2 Ranchos which I am going to fix up, one has a lovely running engine in it and will remain tht way, where as the other has no engine and so I thought a Diesel engine would be great for it.

Don't know about wheels myself Mark, I'll have a look and see if I can find out.

Don't know on the diesel but the rancho petrol engine is the same as fitted to Horizons, that Horizon diesel is the same as fitted to a lot of Peugeot's with turbo as well.

I do know that a five speed gearbox don't fit with out cutting the chassis.

I cant really find out myself just yet as I dont have access to my Ranchos for the next 3 weeks, once I do, I will try the wheels from my mates 1988 Peugeot 309 to see if they fit or not.

Found out from Will at matra magic that Pug wheels will not fit, but that he has a fantastic set of alloys in stock that will fit the ranco so I will be going for them.

People tell me all the time that its great that I run a website for the Sinclair C5 - a vehicle thats not been around for many years, and I must say the same to Will too.

I feel really confident that I will now be able to get my two Ranchos road worthy and kept in good condition with the help of all the Matra Websites that I am amazed are there.

Rancho has spacing of holes 4 x 98 mm - it is the same as for example: Alfa Romeo 33, 145, 146, 155, Fiat Uno, Tipo, Bravo, Lancia Delta, Seat Ibiza (-> 98), Skoda Favorit, etc...

Peugeot has 4 x 108 mm

Renault, Opel, Nissan, VW etc. they have 4 x 100 mm. Some people say that 4 x 100 mm can be mounted to 4 x 98 hub, but I won't try this because I don't believe that it is safe.

Diesel engine in Horizon and Solara was 1,9 XUD Peugeot engine, but problem isn't if it will fit into the Rancho, problem will be with everything else, as for ex. fuel tank, axle shafts, exhaust system - You will must to do it Yourself and it is a lot of work against doubtful result

There is another thing You must to take into account - ET (offset)


When you will use wheels with ET too small (for ex. ET 3) = wheels could be rubbing the wing. Other bad variant is ET too big (ET 60) = wheels will be rubbing shocks or wheel housing.

I don't know which ET is the right one for Rancho, but think that could be around ET 38 which is very common.

I have myself had serious plans of fitting a diesel engine in a Rancho.
As the Peugeot 309 was designed by Simca/ Talbot and in some versions are running with old Simca engines I purchased a cheap 309 diesel with the 5-speed BE1 gearbox. As I have an empty Rancho chassis (with all rust repair done) in my workshop the testing was easy. The engine and gearbox fits into the engine bay of the Rancho but as the diesel engine is longer than the petrol Simca engine, therefore the gearbox gets too near to the left front wheel. A solution could be to move the engine to the right after cutting in the chassis but that will be no good. Further the engine mounts are different. Of cause special exhaust etc. will have to be made but that is only part of the fun.

5 speed gearbox can be fitted in the Rancho, I purchased one Rancho myself with a Solara 1.6 engine and 5 speed box, I broke the car up in parts as the rest of the car was crap.
I know that there is a Rancho running in the UK with the same gearbox engine combination.
The 5- sped gearbox is longer than the 4-speed but the “extension” goes under the chassis.
