Bagheera front brake pads
November 23, 2007, 11:27:48 AM
Hi,

I just learned that the Bagheera front brake pads are the same as Volvo 850 / V70 1992 - 2000 rear brake pads.
At least in Scandinavia these can be found almost anywhere.

Best regards,

Stig

The only difference is that the Bagheera pads have wear indicators and Volvo ones have not.

The rear brake pads for the Bagheera are the same as brake pads for Fiat 130 and Ritmo, Lotus Esprit and Excel, Renault  5,17, 18, 21, 30, Alpine, Espace and Fuego.

Only true for the last Bagheera. Not the early ones.

And of course, there is another difference in the braking material.

You are probably right but I got the info regarding the Volvo pads from the Swedish distributor of EBC brakes. EBC has the same part number listed for the Bagheera front pads and the Volvo rear pads so by them there is no difference.

Hi
I have a bagheera from 74, do any of you know a car with the same brakes? I think that the rear-pads and front-pads are the same.

best regards  Frederik

No, the front pads and the rear pads are not similar at all.

As we explained earlier in this subject:
The Bagheera front pads are the same as the rear pad for many different Volvo models.
The front pads for a Simca Horizon also fits the Bagheera front brakes.

The Bagheera rear pads are the same as pads for different Fiat, Lotus, Renaults and Simcas, as mentioned earlier.

New Bagheera rear pads are 14 mm thick. The Murena does have the same pads but 15 mm thick, as do Citroën Visa, Renault 14 and Peugeot 104 and 305.
The Renault 16 and 18 have the same pads but 16 mm thick.
Some Lancias, Autobianchi A112 and Fiat Chroma also have these pads but only 12 mm thick when new

I hope this will answer your question

Hi Lasse,µ
µ
I would precise "some Simca horizon..." They used different types of front brake calipers on the different models of Horizon. On one of my Bagheera I fitted these calipers to benefit from a bigger pad surface.µ
µ
When I speak of the braking material, I mean that depending of the material used the properties might be quite different. µ
Matra issued a couple of notices on the right quality of pads

OK.
And I quote myself from a Murena subject:

The Horizon has three diffrent kinds of front calipers - Lucas/Girling, ATE/Teves or Bendix.
As far as I know, the Murena has either ATE/Teves or Bendix front calipers. None of the brake pads for the Horizon are the same as any brake pads for the Murena.
Talbot Alpine 1980-85, Talbot Escorial, Simca 1510, Talbot Solara, Sunbeam Minx and Sunbeam Rapier with ATE/Teves calipers use the same front brake pads as the Murena.
Talbot Alpine 1979-80, Simca 1300 1979 and  Simca Alpine 1978-83 with Bendix calipers use the same front brake pads as The Murena

Well the µrena is using a different system. µ
On the Bagheera, you have fixed callipers with a piston on each side. µ
On the µrena, you have a sliding system with only a piston on one side.
µµ
I know that some will disagree but I don't think the system is as good .µ
The Horizon callipers I used have the 2 pistons , the big ones since I also find other calipers with smaller pads.µ
µ
What I'd like to find i s a 4 pistons caliper that fit's on the Bagheera

Hi Spyros,

What calipers have you tested ?

I am thinking of front calipers for older Volvos. They had 4 pot calipers but I dont know offhand what the size of the disk was.
The 13" wheels may be a limiting factor. Would you change to 15" to make room for larger calipers ?

Regards,

Stig

Hi Stig, µ
µ
I was actually thinking to these volvo calipers. I knew that this was an oditie on such a car. µ
But are the holes located at the same position ?µ
µ
I've also heard about Austin Princess calipers but these would be very difficult to find.µ
µ
Yes, I'm considering on one of my Bagheera to switch to 15 " wheels. µ
I've a set of BBS Mahle from an old BMW I had. µ
6X15 at the front and 7X15 at the rear. µ
With limited modifications , they are fine on the Bgheera µ
But as you know these are not 98 but 100 holes to holes.µ
µ
Another choice is the Rancho wheels µ
µ
The front discs have a diameter of 239, an an height of 58µ
µ

Hi Spyros,

I can try to find out the dimensions of the Volvo calipers. If they would fit with none or limited modification then either new or reconditioned should be easy to find in Sweden.

Jaguar XJ is another option but I think all had ventilated disks.

What about modern Fiat and Lancia wheels ? Are they not still 98 mm ?

Stig

I was just looking for something a bit old not to look too much out of space on the bagheera. And I had still this set. But ... I've heard about a company not too far who weld alloys wheels and claims to be able to enlarge alloys. I already knew some doing it for steel wheels but not alloy. Might be able then to make 15 " out of a damaged sets of Bagheera wheels ??

Hi Spyros,

When you say that they can enlarge the wheels dont you think that they just add material to the outer rim so that you can mount a larger tire ?
If this is the case then it would not give any extra room for larger brakes :(

Regards,

Stig
