EBC Green Stuff pads
June 10, 2013, 12:57:18 PM
It's been a long, long time since I last posted as I have been so busy with work but keep calling in to read whenever I get opportunity.

The last time I changed the brake pads I tried EBC Green Stuff on front and rear.
This past weekend I serviced the brakes and to my dismay found that the friction material on the front left piston-side pad was coming away from the steel backing plate as you will see from the photograph.
On checking the right hand side front brake I found that the same was happening with that pad, also on the piston side only but not as badly as on the left side brake.

Both pistons in each caliper are operating perfectly as are the caliper slides with both pins on both sides perfectly free and well lubed from the last time they were serviced.

With the thickness of friction material remaining there should have been many miles left on those pads but I've now fitted Pagid pads and new Pagid rotors at the same time.
I'm not taking any chances on my safety and so also replaced the Green Stuff pads on the rear with new Pagid pads and rotors.

That fault Martin (pad coming away from backing) is usually because the pads have run too hot.  (any make not just EBC Greenstuff)  So if your brakes are fine, either that set was simply faulty or they are not man enough for the job.  Since for most heavy and/or quick cars they recommend Redstuff, maybe the Espace III which is heavy, should be using the red grade.

I have never seen this happen in all the years I have been fitting Greenstuff pads to lots of vehicles.  You should have sent the Greenstuff pads back with a covering letter so they could investigate.  I certainly would.  It is the only way they will get to know and can find out the cause.  If they were faulty, they would probably have sent you some new pads too.
