Espace wheels
May 11, 2009, 12:23:56 PM
Hi,

Can anyone tell me the details of the 16" steel wheels on an early phase 4 espace. i.e. no. of studs, pcd, et etc.

Does anyone know if they'll fit an early phase 3 espace?

Cheers john

Aparently what I should have asked is whether or not the 16" steel wheels from and espace IV phase 1 will fit an espace III phase 1 or 2.
I'd also be interested to know if the alloys are transferable too.

Thanks

Aparently what I should have asked is ...
heh - don't worry. I used the phase1,2,3,4 designation for a long time until I was forced to revise as Renault insisted on using the Espace IV for their conventional steel creation. I have put the model and phase numbers into order here: http://www.matrasport.dk/Cars/Espace/history.html

Regarding your question, I have or have had both cars, but frankly don't remember the answer.  But I am pretty sure my J63 (2.1td 1994) had only 4 bolts, but I can see that the picture from its instruction manual shows a car with 5 (?)

Also, the centre hub diameter is probably larger on the JE - this again only from memory.

You are right, Lennart that your old J63 had 4 bolts. The JE all have 5. The V6 J63 Espace's seem to share the JE dimensions.

So I'm afraid the answer to John's question would be a no. They are not compatible. JK (the steel Espace) wheels will, however, fit the JE as well as the Avantime.

I have digged a little information, and the JE wheels are 5/108/60.1 (holes/diameter/hub)
J63 are 4/100/60.1
J63 V6 is 5/108/60.1 - like the JE :)

You are right, Lennart
YES! ..  :-)
However, this is the picture tat confused me - it comes from the front cover of the instruction booklet for my old J63:

5 holes for bolts - but it may be a result of some form of artistic freedom exercised by the guy who made the booklet. :-)

... and that is a V6 Espace, which has the SAME mounting flange as the JE. Just to confuse, I suppose!

Regarding interchangeability of wheels... it is not just about the number of studs and PCD.... there is also the inset to take into consideration.

You can see many wheels on such as e-bay and on alloy wheel web sites advertised to fit the Espace but the inset is totally different from original. This does not mean that they will not fit but what it does mean is that depending upon how different the inset is from original, the steering geometry can be affected and also the load on the wheel bearings.

The inset of a wheel can usually be determined from a stamp or sometimes molded into the inside of the rim during casting and will be something like E43, which I think from memory is the inset for JE wheels.

You are, of course, absolutely right, Martin!
