Been a little while since I got on here but this little problem might help somebody. Our Espace is rare due to the original owner having a factory fitted Automatic gearbox installed, not a well known option for the J116. Anyway at 122000 miles, the box would only select 3rd and reverse. We checked the usual fuse in the panel in the passenger footwell and that tested out fine. However, what Renault did with this particular car, was to fit a second fuse in the power feed under the bonnet to the gearbox computer and that fuse is not shown on any of the Automatic gearbox wiring diagrams. A new 2 amp glass fuse solved the problem. Just in case anybody is wondering, the fuse was original Renault and encased in a large bakerlte screwed holder tucked away on top of and to the rear of the gearbox computer in the engine bay.
So be warned, if your MJ 3 automatic starts acting up, first check ALL the fuse possibilities, the one that cause our problem was the main power feed to the gearbox ECU.
