Nicholson McLaren engines (U.K.) re-engineered a number of Matra V12's so that the originals can be kept safe for posterity.

These engines were the ones seen/heard at Le Mans in 2012

Why making such complicated decisions ? Just take both engines. ;-) Can´t be a mistake ;-)

Really interesting. However this means that the MATRA Le Mans cars which we saw at Le Mans last years were running with ”reengineered” engines made by McLaren!
