Revisiting old problems

I was looking through some of my old posts and especially this one http://www.matrasport.dk/forum/index.php/topic,1407.0.html where I talk about replacing old and rusted parts with stainless steel, or removing rust and treating with Hammerite paint.
I saw that I asked if anyone knew where it is possible to get new outer cable sleeves for the hand brake assembly. None answered, so I was wondering if none can be had, or if the one of you who knows where just didn't see the post.

Also, next spring I will be taking off the trailing arms and the gearbox in order to replace the 2nd. gear and synchro with one that is in correct shape and clearance from a spare gear box. Also the high 5th. gear modification will be installed, as I got a set from eBay a while back. (different post)

But while the trailing arms are off I am seriously considering buying a new set, since I never got the tracking issue with my remanufactured left arm resolved. (Not that I have noticed any tracking problems, but just to be safe)
So who knows where to get a good set, other than from Simon. Are the Danish ones still possible to get?

The first MOT of my 2.2  in 2008 it failed because the the outer handbrake cable was open at some points.
Therefore the inner cable rusted.
There are specialist car-shops that make them for around 50-60 Euro just like the cable for the speedometer.
I didn't have time to take all the trouble, so I took the easy way out and ordered at the dealer.

ATTENTION....the 2.2 and 1.6 cable are different.
There are even 2 types of 1.6 cable as far as I know.

Regarding trailing arms: Politecnica now has a new series of their own brand. These are expensive(Euro 605) but purporting to be made of high quality Chrome Molybden steel.

Hi Herman.

The cables look nice. However I have made a stainless cable out of an aircraft cable. So I would like to just find a source for the outer cables.
By the way watch out for your cooling pipes. They look a bit rusty. The worst place is under the rubber behind the rusty bracket shown on your picture and the one in front. Mine busted while stuck in line on the highway. I am sure that is where the head cracked.

The whole coolingsystem is revived now and look like this.



Isn't ther a motorshop that can help?
Also in mowers they use the thicker cables.

How did yours look under the rubber and bracket holding them?
Also, your radiator looks new. I would like to replace mine, perhaps with a modern core with turbulent flow.
I plan to try to see if I can have it re-cored, but that will have to wait for spring.

The cooling pipes of the 2.2 were good.
Derusting outside and some paint did it.
The car was in a heated garage from 1990 til 2007 driving only hot summer days for 200 miles a year.
I replaced some hoses, the radiator and thermostaths.
Brackets galvanised, I think it will do for 25 years to come.

The 1.6 however was total garbage.




I replaced almost anything.
Not all new but good condition stuff.(NB: had so many things to do on the car it would be very expecive to renew all)



The reason for a defect headgasket?



Better one 13psi


Also the expansion bottle had a rip.


It's OK and running daily for more then 2 years now.



In time I will renew things.

Back in the days when I ran a Bagheera as my daily driver (mid to late 80's) my handbrake cable snapped just after passing an MoT. With no chance of getting a factory replacement quickly, I went to my local motor factor who kindly let me go through their stock of handbrake cable until I found one with similar outers (I think it was some kind of Fiat). The inners were a bit long but that was fairly easy to sort out.

I get my hand brake cables made up by Speedy Cables, Jon.  I have greasers fitted to the outer sections, so I can grease the cables which keeps the water out and the cables nice and free!  They work out a bit more expensive (£60 plus postage) but are better than the originals.  I have had them made and fitted to Bagheera too, and the hand brake is much better.  They fit a rubber 'cap' at the inner end and the rubber 'bellows' gaiter at the caliper end.
