Hi to you all, I am from the Midlands in Sunny Birmingham.
I am a bit confused because I have rung several renault main dealers for a timing belt change and 3 of them quoted me about £750. But 1 quoted me £360. Any one out there had a timing belt changed on 2.2 dti ? If so how much did you pay, I can't understand why there is so much difference between the various quotes.
Also for Martin Tyas - How do i get to the EGR VALVE on my 2.2 dti. Nothing wrong, but I read your rather long note about the EGR valves so i was just wandering if I ever need to access it, at least I know where it is.

Cheers Jag

I don't think the DTI has an EGR valve... overall it is a simpler construction with a slower running turbo, lower pressure injection etc, and I have never heard of an exhaust gas return valve on that engine... I may be wrong?

Anders,

I think you may be right, because looking at the picture that Martin has put on the forum, it doesn't look at familiar with what I have under my bonnet.
That makes me feel a whole lot happier. One less thing to worry about with big betsy.

Many Thanks  Jag

When I asked City Renault in Bristol to quote for the timing belt change on my 24V they were very reluctant to give me the price. They clearly hoped I would let them get on with the job and then hit me with the bigger than £1500 total when I picked the car up. (It actually cost me under £1000 with a  Citroen specialist)

I find it very worrying that Renault cannot manage  clear menu pricing.

Thanks for that Will,  I may end up giving some Citroen People a call to see  what they would charge.

I find it very worrying that Renault cannot manage clear menu pricing.

Indeed they should be able to advise almost exactly how much a particular job is going to cost because they have time schedules for every task... not just so they can quote customers but primarily in order that they can make warranty claims. Manufacturers only reimburse warranty based upon the labour time according to a fixed schedule... it puts the onus back on the dealership to ensure that they have fully trained service engineers plus any special tools required to do the job within the prescribed time otherwise the excess time and therefore cost is at the dealership's expense.

However, as with most things it still comes down to people so if you happen not to get to talk to the right one then you often don't get the right outcome. A worrying phenomenon I have found amongst car dealerships in general, not just Renault dealers, is that they seem to put people on the service desks who's knowledge is poor to non-existant. My nearest Renault dealer has a young girl on the service counter (I'm not being sexist here because there are plenty of women who do have mechanical knowledge)...she tries to be helpful (and looks rather nice) but is about as bright as a glow-worm's armpit when it comes to cars.... so what chance is there of her being able to understand the problem sufficiently well  to be able to translate that on to a job card that the service engineer can use to work on your vehicle? Needless to say I took my car there once and have since travelled a further 25 miles to another Renault dealer that has people who know what you are talking about.

Going back to menu pricing.... In the Renault dealerships I've visited they have a board on the wall behind the service counter with standard prices for standard jobs for each model. The last time I looked at the price for changing a timing belt on an Espace it was, I seem to remember, £360 as Jag was quoted..... but you also have to notice the little word in front of the price which states "from". So maybe that dealer simply gave Jag the "from" price instead of the "to" price because it obviously varies by particular model and engine..... it comes back to the people thing again.... if they aren't clued up enough about the products they sell and service to realise that different variants have different prices for the "same" job then is there any wonder you get prices from the menu but only get priced for a starter but with no main course or sweet trolley?

The sad thing is that I'm not sure that I feel any better for having had that rant!!!!   Undecided

Thanks for that Martin,  you seem to have reminded me of a nasty encounter that I experienced a couple of years ago when my turbo had packed up and this particular dealer had quoted me about  £1000 to replace the turbo. This price was quoted to me by an extremely nice young female on the reception desk, this price compriised of approx £600 labour and about £400 for the turbo which I thought was quite reasonable being from a dealer. I almost had a coronary on collecting the car when the dealer gave me a bill for nearly £1700. I paid under protest but luckily for me  i had got the turob part number that this young female had quoted me which was a turbo for a van, but my turbo was nearly a cool £1100. I didn't have to threaten the dealer for long as I have a  friend who works in trading standards and with his help put together a nice letter informing them how the media were going to be informed of my unpleasant experience and court action thrown in for good measure. I didn't have to wait long to get the extra amount that I was forced to pay in order to get my car back. But  It wasn't a nice experience at all, some one else in my shoes may not have chosen to challenge the dealer  in this instance, but there was on way that that they were going to get away with it by over charging me for their mistake.  But it's true what you say Martin, these nice sexy girls they have on reception don't really know what they are on about ( I too am not being sexist, cause I know of a couple of good lady mechanics , sorry Vehicle Technicians .)  This particular experience has really put me off dealing with dealers, but unfortunately there's not a lot of people out there who you can really trust under the bonnet of your espace, some of them run a mile when you mention what car you have. There's omly so much you can carry out your self with an espace, especially without a proper hydraulic ramp which is a necessary for an espace for alot of the major works.
I really adore my espace it's just that I can't really afford to part with it now after spending a small fortune on it, turbo, heater matrix and 2 off clutch master cylinders. I think beofre the timing belt is done I probably need to have the clutch replaced, as my pedal is quite hard and it has been for the last 6 months.
But thanks for reminding me Martin, about just  how good the dealers in
 England really are !

It would be worthwhile getting the water pump done at the same time. It is ran off the cambelt and if you have done high miles it might be due to leak sometime soon and involves the same labour as doing the cambelt. As they are in there anyway  It won't add too much to the bill. But  worth it as prevention is better than cure!
