Faulty Fault Warnings!
December 27, 2006, 12:57:01 PM
Happy Christmas everyone.

My 24V has developed a new game. Every time I start it I get either an ABS (STOP!) warning or an Airbag warning.  The ABS usually stays on and bleeps every time I brake. Last night they both came on and seemed to cancel each other as the clock/temp came on and stayed on and the ABS/Airbag kept quiet for the rest of the journey.

I've no reason to suspect an actual fault because the warnings are random.

Any ideas as to what's causing this, or is is just mid life crisis, too much Christmas etc? (Oh sorry that's me, not my car!)

Will

Hi Will

Mine has the same on the airbag - the Renault diagnostic tool cannot talk to the module at all, but the airbag light only comes on from time to time. I suspect there's a communication problem somewhere in the system and I'm determined to open it up so that I can check the wiring to the module. The fuse is okay.

I think it's odd that the airbag fault indication in the LCD only comes on intermittently (e.g. my wife has never seen it and she's the one who uses the car every day), but the diagnostic tool has shown a problem twice now, so I tend to beleive there is a problem of some kind.

the airbag light only comes on from time to time.

And this is not simply caused by (the) poor connectors under the seats ?

Could be, but then: why can't the diagnostic tool talk to the airbag module?

Maybe it doesn't speak French ?

More seriously, if the airbag signal comes on from time to time, then it could be that the aribag module actually speaks TO the computer, - and just doesn't listen ? (dare I say female?)

So Airbag module is female; it just speaks without caring if anyone is actually listening? And the computer is male cos it'll block out any unwanted noise successfully..?  ???  ;)  8)

I haven't done anything about this problem as it continues to be random and the abs is generally not affected, but today I noticed there is a single red wire clipped on to the left side front abs cable, but its pair  doesn't go all the way to the hub  on the right wheel.

The wire is broken but doesn't seem to cause the abs light to come on. Anyone know what it does ?

Yes that's for the brake pad wear indicator.
If you don't cut it off, it will break by itself after a couple of years. In other words, it's useless ;)
