Big bore 2.2

Does anyone have any experience, information or thoughts on the maximum cubic capacity or dimensions a 2.2 block could be bored out to safely without imminent failure?
I am intersted in as big as possible and sourcing pistons accordingly.

Muhehe, I had the same idea some time ago There is a company, which is selling forged pistons for cca 250,-Eur/set. To buy forged pistons for Murena is so expensive, so I though about to extend my cylinders and use something available. The biggest problem is that I can't remember the name of the company - their website  
I must to meet the man who told me this info before...

But I found the result in my PC:
Murena 2,2 - 91,7 x 81,6 = 2155 ccm, r = 45,85 mm
Opel Manta - 92,5 x 81,6 = 2192 ccm, r = 46,25 mm
BMW M3 2,5 - 95,8 x 81,6 = 2352 ccm, r = 47,9 mm
Subaru - 98,0 x 81,6 = 2461 ccm , r = 49 mm

I think that Manta pistons will be easily available and that is the maximum bore which could be safe too...?

Look up this page; it is very good for searching new non original pistons.
You might need to make room for circlips to ensure the rod.

Thanks for the feedback gents. LarsB hyperlinks are particularly interesting, which lit a 200W lightbulb in my head big time!

I think Bean is trying to create a "Stroker Engine" using the existing crank offset ground with different connecting rods to increase the stroke length and thus displacement. If so then this hyperlink below is also interesting reading. The advantages are that it is ideally suited for low revving engines giving an increase in torque, which would be perfect for the Murena engine.

Since someone else brings up the Opel manta (I love them).
The displacement of the 4 cylinder CIH can be upped to 2800cc!!!, but by far the most usual layout is 2.4.
