V6 24v GEARBOX OIL CHANGE??
January 12, 2006, 06:02:56 PM
Hello,

Does anyone have any experience on changing the filter and oil of the Automatic gearbox on a V6 24v. I'm not sure if it has been changed before.

P.s. Mine has done 111000 Km's (so far no leaks or problems)

Any suggestions will be great.

I have. I did it after 4 yrs / 130 tkm. Renault (and even ZF who makes the gearbox) specifies it to be filled for life, i.e. no changes required. But I don't think it's a good idea to leave it unchanged.

I had the oil changed by a local auto gearbox specialist.

He could only drain off 4 l of the 9 (or so) in the box.
We agreed to have it done again a year later, and then every 2 yrs.

It is not possible to change the filter (without dismantling the gearbox).

The gearbox (ZF 4HP20) is quite robust and will run for 400000 kms or more if we keep it well. It is used in MB Vito too, and the other cars with the PSA/Renault 3.0 24V engine (Peugeot 607, 406, Renault Laguna, Safrane).

Don't worry about it and change the oil only. It's inside the gearbox and since you do not want to dismantle the gearbox unless you are reconditioning it completely, you have no options.

And it is still a very good gearbox that will last long, even if you can't replace the filter.

I bought my 1999 Renault 3.0 24V Grand Espace 2 weeks before christmas, had it for 12 hours then driving to family for christmas the timing belts broke, result recon engine required. Got it back this weekend drove the 120 miles home from the garage then next day went to use the car, sounds like the gearbox has gone.

When the car is started and placed in drive the engine pulls against the handbrake, no problem, but then after about 20 seconds the clutches begin to slip and then stop pulling altogether, the process can be repeated if the engine is stopped and then started again after 1 minute or so. It has been suggested that this could be due to dirt or something blocking the gearbox oil filter, any ideas, if so would just changing the gearbox oil help?

That's bad luck. How many miles has the car done?

As the engine has just been changed I would check the wiring connections first as the transmission is electronically controlled.

It's not just defaulting to 3rd gear 'limp home' mode is it?

How old was the timing belt? Renault specs no more than 4 yrs, max 120 tkm here in DK.

It happened to me after my engine was steam cleaned and the professional cleaner filled my autobox ecu container with water ???

With the ecu disabled you have one forward gear which is 3rd, so the torque converter has to work very hard to get the car moving.

I don't remember any faults coming up on the dash display, but water in other places was causing misfiring anyway so it was undriveable.

The belts were changed at 72,000 miles as recommended by Renault, but this was 14 months ago and Renault parts are only gaurenteed for 12 months.

No, I loose all traction in all gears even reverse after about 30 or so seconds, the car does not even try to move even on level ground, but good news, the garage that replaced the engine are going to look at it for me later this week and when I know what the problem is I will report back. The engine still runs perfectly even though the car won't move.

That's really really bad luck. I was so fortunate (?) to break the timing belt on a 2.0 l engine after 11 months, so it didn't cost me anything to have it fixed. I don't understand that Renault will not cover this incident. And I really hope the garage will get the gearbox working properly for you so you will end up driving a good Espace.

This is actually my second Espace, the first being a 2.0 RT which had covered 60K miles when I got it then had 98K miles on it when I got rid of it some 12 months later for the 3 litre, this was a good car it did everything I wanted it to and more, the timing belt went on that just after I bought it but this was due to a bad mechanic in the garage where I bought the car. I travel 100 miles per day and so for economic reasons bought an old diesel (Cavalier sorry) so thought I would treat myself to the 3.0 Espace for the family at weekends, still looks lovley on the drive even if it wont move at the moment.
